A networked and digitized video surveillance service has revolutionized the video monitoring services industry. Internet Protocol (IP) video surveillance provides benefits, such as flexibility and scalability over CCTV camera system. Business organizations are preferring IP cameras for video surveillance for advanced workplace surveillance purposes. Video surveillance as a service (VSaaS) refers to video surveillance carried out with the help of cloud services. Video processing and management functions, such as storage, recording, remote viewing, cyber security, and others are performed on the cloud. It eliminates the need to store recordings on onsite servers with a storage facility on offsite clouds and accessed using web or a smartphone app.
The maintenance of locally hosted CCTV systems is a tiresome process as resources need to be invested and all businesses or owners are not able to afford. A possibility of making mistakes remains while maintaining CCTV camera and its recording, as media can get overwritten accidently or date stamps can be corrupted. In addition, hardwiring for CCTV camera and controls is difficult to upgrade with introduction of new technologies. Installation of new cameras or addition of monitoring solutions becomes tricky for onsite systems. VSaaS simplifies this process by allowing a single browser or smartphone app to gain access of images and recordings from multiple cameras located at multiple locations.
The major problem solved by VSaaS is security. Data and sensitive information remain secure when stored on the cloud at offsite locations. As CCTV surveillance cameras contain sensitive information, this information can be stolen, tarnished, or destroyed forever. So, data protection issues can be resolved with the help of VSaaS by storing it at offsite locations with access restrictions. These security issues can be solved and data protection can be achieved by adapting to VSaaS and changing altitude to offsite locations. There are three things that should be considered for information security purposes – confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
Confidentiality : It ensures that only right people get access to sensitive data at the right time. Local CCTV system are often unprotected and recordings are not encrypted. With the help of VSaaS, data encryption is used for protection of recordings and access is given to authorized personnel with username and password. Data is encrypted on offsite locations and made available with appropriate decryption keys.
Integrity : It is important for data to remain in its original format and should not be tarnished or destroyed. In VSaaS, integrity is maintained with the help of hash, a cryptographic primitive that uses a function to process the data in such a way that no alterations are made in future.
Availability : It is essential that data should be available for authorized personnel whenever need to access arises. In locally managed CCTV systems, hardware failure and power outage pose serious problems in availability of data on time. Moreover, accidental switching off of systems may result in loss of significant evidence. On the other hand, cloud hosted systems provide a robust service with guaranteed annual uptime. Even if internet connection goes out, micro SD card would play its part by enabling recordings without interruption. Images and recording can be uploaded after re-establishment of connection. In addition, destroying and overwriting data on VSaaS is laborious, as activity logs need to be maintained for file creation, deletion, or overwriting.
