Computer numerical control (CNC) machining is a manufacturing process which dictates the movement of factory tools and machinery with the help of pre-programmed computer software. This process is used to control a wide range of complex machinery, from grinders to CNC routers and mills. CNC machining overcomes the limitations of manual control, where operators are needed to prompt and guide the commands of machining tools via levers, wheels, and buttons. It allows operators to monitor and control the functioning of machinery with the help of a computer numerical control system, comprising of software programs and consoles.

Promising types of CNC machinery helping in smooth operations of various industrial activities

CNC milling machines are gaining huge popularity across the sectors including aerospace, medical and electronics, where high accuracy and consistency are needed. These machines are moved and monitored by numerical computer control rather than manual intervention. Milling machines perform various machining processes such as drilling and cutting parts with enhanced precision, leaving no space for human error. The machines are ideal for various industrial processes as they can accommodate exact sizes and shapes of all kinds of material. Because of its wide applicability, the milling machines segment is expected to hold a dominant share in the industry, generating a revenue of $12,145.5 million from 2023 to 2032.

On the other hand, CNC lathe machines are innovative machines that spin material around spindle and a fixed cutting tool. Instead of being controlled by manual labor, these machines enable the movement of various components by coded instructions fed to a computer. A lathe swing is used to rotate objects that can perform cutting, sanding, and drilling. Lathe machines are mainly used for shaping hard materials like metal and wood. The rotating device in the lathe machine functions as a stationary cutting tool, enabling factories to design various pieces of machinery with higher accuracy.

Two new high-performance CNC machining centers by Baker Industries

In July 2023, Baker Industries, a Lincoln Electric Company based in Michigan expanded its manufacturing versatility and capacity by launching two new high-performance CNC machining centers, EMCO MECOF UMILL 1800 Universal Machining Centers with Heidenhain TNC 640 controls. These in-house capabilities supported the growing demand for precision machining of high-performance superalloys and other specialty materials commonly used in aerospace, energy, defense, and shipbuilding applications. The new machines manufactured in these facilities boast impressive technical specifications, automatic tool chargers, and diverse high-speed 5-axis machining capabilities including drilling, milling, turning, and undercutting. Such advanced features of CNC machines augmented the company’s vertical integration, offering customers a single-source supplier for all their high-precision and high-precision and larger-scale CNC machining needs.

Which region and country have stood ahead with an increased use of CNC machinery?

The CNC machinery industry is examined across different regions and countries. By region-wise analysis, the Asia-Pacific region held the maximum market share in the industry in 2022 and is expected to grow with the highest CAGR during 2023-2032. This is mainly due to the surge in automation capabilities in the manufacturing sector across the region. Furthermore, the growth in the automotive sector in the developing countries such as is expected bolster the growth of the CNC machinery industry throughout the region. Additionally, the sector has experienced rapid industrialization due to the development in transportation, new inventions, high immigration, and heavy investments in the construction sector which is has increased the demand for advanced CNC machines across the region.

On the contrary, based on country-wise analysis, India is projected to exhibit the highest CAGR of 4.2% from 2023 to 2032, due to the increased focus on infrastructure development and construction activities in the country. However, Africa is expected to rank second in terms of growth, rising with a CAGR of 4.1% over the estimated period.

Role of leading players in creating massive investment opportunities in the sector

The top players in the domain have made alliances such as mergers and acquisitions to stay ahead in the competitive landscape. For instance, in February 2024, UVA LIDKÖPING, a leading supplier of high-precision grinding machines announced its acquisition of 100% of the shares in CNC North, a renowned provider of mechanical rebuilds solutions and other grinding equipment. With this acquisition, UVA LIDKÖPING aimed to strengthen its regional services segment by offering a comprehensive range of advanced grinding machinery tailored to the specific needs of its customers.

Similarly, in November 2023, Approved Sheet Metal, a well-established custom sheet metal fabrication company announced its acquisition of Technical Machine Components, a CNC machine shop in Hudson, New Hampshire. This acquisition would help Approved Sheet Metal expand its portfolio by delivering a complete range of services for CNC machine developers across the UK and allow the company to serve its customers with enhanced capabilities.

To sum up, the increase in penetration of innovations and advanced technologies in machine tools is expected to boost the growth of the domain in the forthcoming years. Moreover, the growth in infrastructure projects and surge in automotive and industrial machinery are anticipated to increase the demand for CNC machines in the future.
