It was in 1953, that world’s first flow–cytometry equipment was patented. But, today the flow–cytometry market has come a long way, from what it was almost 60 years back. Researchers at Allied Market Research analyzing the share, size, demand and growth of the industry reveal that increased adoption rate in biotechnology labs will keep the future of this sector robust. Earlier, these devices were used as experimental equipment, but now technology advancements have made both flow-cytometry and their accompanying solutions a major market. Besides this, several new developments are expected to contribute to the market growth in 2016.

Big brands expand their popular line

Science and technology companies, are expanding their popular line of flow cytometers to accommodate high–power modulated laser. Following the isolation and innovation of genes encoding proteins, highly accountable for biological fluorescence, the florescent proteins have transformed the study of life science. In addition, mutation of green florescent proteins and invention of naturally transpiring proteins that emit elsewhere in the spectrum have presented florescent proteins of different colors. Merck’s easyCyte is a laser variant that serves the demand for instrumentation and enable users to assess heterogeneous biological systems in single experiment. Industry experts believe that Merck’s innovation will open new growth opportunities for the flow-cytometry market.

CYTO 2016 showcases advanced devices

CYTO 2016 is ready to showcase some highly advanced flow cytometers from reputed brands. Some global players, especially in hematology diagnostics, revealed that they will demonstrate their product in the event in Seattle, June 11 to 15, 2016. Sysmex America, Inc., is one of the participants, ready to exhibit their enhanced knowledge in flow cytometry market. The company has strengthened its hematology knowledge by acquiring Partec GmbH, the popular developer of flow cytometers. Ralph Taylor, an executive vice president at Sysmex America, Inc. said "As research partners in flow cytometry, we will have global experts at the show who can answer questions from scientists across academia, industrial and clinical research to discover how Sysmex can help them achieve their goals."

Universities review new applications

In a recent incident, experts at the Qatar University College of Medicines reviewed cytometers that enable users to assess tumors. During the symposium ‘Flow Cytometry-Based Phenotyping – Evolving Applications in Health Care and Research,’ researchers highlighted the recent advancements and uses of flow cytometers in research and clinical application. Such events held in universities across the world aim at bringing both practitioners and researchers and create partnership opportunities.

Software simplifies data comparison for labs

Demand for an application to standardize the information obtained through flow cytometers, to assess the living cells has increased over the past four to five years. Bioengineers at Rice University have discovered a software, called “FlowCal” improves the capability of the scientists to compare flow – cytometry information.  Echoing his sentiments Sebastián Castillo-Hair, who led the project said "It can measure fluorescent signals from tens of thousands of cells in a couple of minutes. He explained “This is useful because fluorescent signals represent a lot of things in cells. In synthetic biology, for example, fluorescence represents the output of a genetic circuit."

ISO standards with probiotics become vital for quality assessment

Cell counting techniques for analyzing the quality of culture, that helps in identifying the proportion of living cells has often been questioned. But, an ISO standard introduced early this year not only aims at speeding up the quality control but also facilitates trade. ISO 19344 offers a new method to quantify lactic acid bacteria through flow cytometry particularly in dairy products. This has resulted in a collaboration between the “International Dairy Federation (IDF) “and ISO.

Besides, the new developments discussed above, many companies would be launching dedicated flow cytometer for various clinical uses along with reagent packages.  Industry experts highlight that there are some great discoveries expected in the next five to six years. We would also observe the association of hematology analyzer with best flow cytometers in 2016. Already the imaging devices have created a boom in the flow cytometry market, and with end-users constantly looking out for new advances, the sector will attract new investors.
