Enzymes, basically act as catalyzers in any chemical reaction. When added to a substrate, these proteins or RNAs lower the activation energy of the reaction and hence accelerate it. Commercially available enzymes are used to enhance the quality of finished products. For instance, its presence in detergents causes the removal of stains from fabrics and dishes. Enzymes have widespread applications in diverse business segments based on their type, out of which food & beverage processing segment lead the current demand figures.

Dominance of food enzymes market

The biocatalysts derived from micro-organisms, animals, or plants, which can alter biochemical reaction speed in food & beverage are known as food enzymes. They are mainly used as additives to boost digestibility, increase shelf-life, and improve texture of food & beverages. The adoption rate of food enzymes has increased rapidly in sectors such as meat processing, manufacturing of predigested edibles, and dairy products. In addition, they are also used as a fermentation agent in a range of specialty food items and amino-acids. Right from the discovery of detox enzymes that encourage people for guilt-free consumption of desserts, to fermented drinks and more, enzymes rule our daily diet.

Interest in digestive enzymes is growing worldwide for its capability to breakdown food into absorbable components. There are handful of situations, where digestive enzymes provide greater advantages. Some of these conditions include pancreatic insufficiency, high-fiber diet and lactose intolerance. Bakery enzymes that are generally in chemical form gain popularity for their excellent biochemical actions and for acting as a catalyst. These enzymes are mainly used in food items such as cookies, pastries, and cakes. Bakery enzymes can not only generate appeal but also improve the appearance and texture of the bakery item.

Baking industry, dietetics, and pharmaceutical industries find innovative product enhancers from the class of food enzymes. Sojaprotein, from the Victoria Group, offers high-protein enzymatically-active SOPRO-PEAB and SOPRO-UTB soybean flour, with high lipoxygenase content that acts as a flour bleaching agent. The company specifically targets those consumers who depend greatly on gluten-free food.

Novozymes, the largest provider of enzymes, launched Saphera in March 2016. Saphera is a lactase enzyme to precise desired lactose levels in lactose-free milk and fermented dairy products. The enzyme converts lactose to galactose and glucose component, thus making it suitable for lactose intolerant people. Another product from the company, Extenda, is a glucoamylase blend of enzyme solution that offers convenient conversion of starch to dextrose syrup. These enzymes provide the targeted ‘sweetness levels’ at an affordable cost of conversion.

Emerging market for biofuel enzymes

Eyeing the profitable prospects in the food enzymes market, leading manufacturers now focus on the launch of new enzymes. Expansion of product portfolio to suit manufacturing requirements of the end business verticals proves to be wise business strategies for the vendors. DuPont Industrial Biosciences announced the OPTIMASH® AD-100 enzyme in July, 2016. It is used for increasing biogas and yields up to 13% in anaerobic digesters. OPTIMASH AD-100 comes after the multi-year supply contract signed with Quad County Corn Processors (QCCP) for cellulosic biofuel production. Avantec® Amp was the enzyme launched by Novozymes in 2015, which improves overall corn ethanol production, while simultaneously reducing the requirement for complex chemicals in the process.

This is significant in light of the fact that fuels from renewable sources are emerging as an important alternative to conventional ones. DuPont’s recent launches are environment-centric and boost efficiency of the biofuel industry. Priorities in focus has changed for the manufacturers in the world enzymes market. They realize that proper application of enzymes can cause a huge difference to the environment.

Analysts take on global enzymes market

With regard to the recent developments in the enzyme market, Allied Market Research published a report titled “World Enzymes Market—Opportunities and Forecasts, 2014–2020”. As per the report projections, the global enzymes market is expected to reach $5.4 billion by the end of 2020. During the forecast period 2014-2020, it will register a net CAGR of 7.8%. End-users are expected to adopt the new products in the market for the benefit of their own businesses, given the considerable cost-cuttings that can be achieved through their use.

Among the various geographies, analysts estimate the Asia-Pacific region to register highest CAGR of 10.3% during 2015–2022. Advanced research outcomes in biotechnology verticals, such as molecular biology and genetic engineering, are also expected to increase demand for nuclease, DNA ligase, and polymerase enzymes. Recombinant DNAs produced from the help of these enzymes will help combat several life-threatening cardiovascular, lysosomal, and oncological disorders. Meanwhile, business stakeholders continue to find profitable investment prospects in the food & beverage, dairy, and biofuel processing sectors.
