Hardware encryption is an encryption technique of hardware that uses complex mathematical procedures and function for security of digital data. The data is accessible to authorized personnel only as it can be protected by key or password. There are certain shortcomings for software encryption process thought it is cheaper. It requires continuous updating to protect from online threats and hackers, complicated driver installations, and become slow many times.  The process to apply software encryption to data generated in organization is tedious, and user may skip few steps that could be risky. The encrypted data becomes susceptible to potential hackers and online threats.

Advantages of hardware encryption over software encryption:

On the other hand, hardware encryption is relatively faster, convenient, and reliable. It doesn’t require many system resources or complicated processes for encryption and decryption. In addition, no need to update, no costs related to conventional software solution, and devices are easier to reset. In turn, it reduces operational IT costs by eliminating redeployment of assets. The security level of data is increased as data cannot be decrypted without private password. Eying to advantages over software encryption, manufacturers are including this technique in their devices.

Kingston’s Hardware Encrypted USB Devices:

Kingston launched USB drives, DataTraveler Vault Privacy 3.0 and DataTraveler 4000 G2, having 256 bit AES hardware encryption. The cryptography has been accredited by Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS). It is a standard that accredits and provides certifications for encryption implementation techniques. DataLocker’s SafeConsole Encryption Management Platform manages USB drives locally or remotely. The crucial feature of devices is inactivity lock, which locks device after certain period of inactivity that is configured. Hijacking from malicious programs can be prevented using onboard autorun protection.

In addition, accessing drives in specific locations is possible with the help of Geolocation and Geofencing. The master password feature is not included, while forgotten passwords can be reset securely. Specific types of files can only be stored in the device using white-list filetype restrictor.

“Human error, malicious attacks and technical failures can place employee and corporate data at risk. Companies, agencies and organizations need to implement a security policy well before anything goes wrong as it’s critical to prevent non-compliance, fines and even financial loss,” said Nathan Su, Flash Memory Sales Director, APAC Region, Kingston. “Our latest encrypted managed USB drives, the recent IronKey acquisition and growing DataLocker partnership all demonstrates Kingston’s commitment to providing the most secure and largest family of encrypted USB solutions on the market.”
