Weight loss and weight management diet are food consumed for reducing weight or maintaining particular weight. People are focusing on reducing overall calorie intake in order to lose weight or prevent weight from gaining. Increasing health and fitness consciousness, rising obesity, and changing lifestyle is responsible for preference of diet and food supplements to control weight. Meal replacements, such as protein bars, protein shakes, and food, such as oatmeal, sweet potato, and brown rice are preferred in diet.

Pulses to help in weight loss and weight management:

As per Canadian researchers, humble foods, such as lentils, beans, peas, chickpeas, and others can be used for weight loss programs. They have analyzed data from 21 clinical trials on aforementioned foods, commonly known as ‘pulses’ and found that it can help people feel full, and reduce weight. Russell de Souza, a lead author of study and a researcher at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, said in a hospital news release, "Though the weight loss was small, our findings suggest that simply including pulses in your diet may help you lose weight, and we think more importantly, prevent you from gaining it back after you lose it."

According to researchers, previous studies have shown that consumption of lentils, bean, and other pulses makes people feel hunger has been satisfied. Pulses have a low glycemic index, which implies that they can be broken down steadily in the digestive tract. So, it can be preferred over animal proteins or unhealthy fats in meals.

Meal replacement shakes for weight loss program:

Meal replacements are used to replace meals by a portion-controlled, nutritionally-balanced shakes or meals that help in losing weight. Meal replacement shakes give around 800-900 kilojoules of energy per serve. Charlene Grosse, accredited practicing dietitian and spokesperson for the Dietitians Association of Australia, told The Huffington Post Australia, “Meal replacements are high in protein and fibre, which help you to feel full and satisfied.” Besides shakes, there are other forms of meal replacements which are better than others. She continued, “They come in a variety of formulations -- including powders, shakes, bars and soups.”

She recommended total meal replacements over partial meal replacements as they are nutritionally complete and can be preferred over all three meals. Grosse said, “Partial meal replacements are not generally nutritionally complete -- they don’t provide all of the nutrients your body needs to function properly, leaving you at risk of developing vitamin or mineral deficiencies. They are designed to replace one or two of your daily meals.”

Meal replacements are beneficial for people but it is not an easy or quick fix. It is not a replacement for regular exercise and healthy diets, but it can be a helpful tool to lose weight. Grosse told HuffPost Australia. “Weight management is more complex than energy in and energy out. If it were that simple, we would not have the epidemic we have at present in western society.”
