UV disinfection is an effective method for elimination of unwanted and hazardous chemicals and providing pathogen free resources. UV disinfection equipment is used in applications, such as water treatment, wastewater treatment, surface disinfection, air treatment, and others. Its primary function is to elimination of organic and inorganic chemicals, such as chlorine, ozone, chloramines from water and air sources. Governments are taking initiatives to provide clean water and air with growing concerns of public health.

Advantages of UV disinfection equipment:

•    No involvement of hazardous chemicals
•    No by-products are generated
•    Energy efficient
•    Effective against all microbes, such as bacteria, virus, etc.
•    Efficient disinfection performance at cheaper cost

CSIR-CEERI’s UV disinfection equipment:

The mercury-free plasma (MFP) UV-lamp has been developed by CSIR-Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-CEERI), Pilani for water disinfection systems. It allows users to drink water free of mercury, which is hazardous to environment as well as health. This technology has been handed over to two manufacturers for mass production. It is developed as an alternative for mercury based UV lamps.

"It is mercury free, operates at room temperature. It has a zero start-up time and is also easily repairable," said Ram Prakash, a scientist and one of the team members at CSIR-CEERI who developed this technology. "This is an indigenous technology developed for the first time in the country by our scientists. This technology has been well-tested in the household water purifier systems. We are planning to scale it up for municipality and sewage wastewater treatment plants with the help of Indian industries. This would certainly bring a new revolution worldwide in the water industry specially by eliminating mercury from the existing UV-lamps."

There are various applications of this technology including, sterilization of food, surfaces, air-conditioners, air fresheners, medical equipment, and ill-skin conditions for hospitals. Furthermore, it can also be used in toilet sterilization in trains, portable water purifiers for soldiers & farmers, and water supply in trains & buses. The technology will be available in the market after commercialization and licensing of know-how agreements.

Passavant Area Hospital's germ-eliminating UV disinfection robot:

Passavant Area Hospital has included Tru-D SmartUVC, which is a germ-eliminating UV disinfection robot to its cleaning strategies. The hospital, situated in Jacksonville, Illinois, is endeavoring to provide quality care to patients by including new technologies. Passavant would employ the disinfection robot in the operation theaters and other areas, such as isolation rooms, with the focus on preventing the spread of MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus), C.diff (Clostridium difficle), and other hospital-acquired infections.
"Passavant Area Hospital is committed to providing a safe and clean environment for our patients and staff," said Kerri Barton, Manager of Environmental Services at Passavant Area Hospital. "Having Tru-D will elevate our existing cleaning protocols to add another layer of protection to ensure our facility is germ-free."

First, the hospital staff cleans rooms using conventional methods and then, Tru-D completes the disinfection process. The robot takes minimum time to disinfect the room to give time Environmental Services staff for other tasks. Once the disinfection process is complete, Tru-D is switches off automatically and sends an audio signal to the operator.
