Iran ended the United States’ monopoly in the bio-implants market when it began its mass production in 2010. Ocular bio-implants labelled to slash the operation time and lead to quicker recovery was definitely a milestone in this direction say research analysts at Allied Market Research. Industry experts reveal that from experimenting with the biochips to ceramic implants, the bio-implants market has come a long away.
So what’s trending?
A sudden increase in the aging populations is believed to be one of the prime factors to drive the industry in 2016. Elderly people are highly susceptible to several chronic diseases. Those who think the position of the bio-implant industry is weakening in North America and Europe will have to finally get their statistics clear. Furthermore, series of funding and investments made on bio-implant manufacturers active in Asia will help it gain an important place among the developed regions. Rapidly developing healthcare infrastructures and growing disposable income are some other factors strengthening Asia’s presence in the international market. Officials at American College of Surgeons, outline that approximately 29% of the trauma cases are due to road accidents. Besides this, the instances of road accidents that often lead to death have increased by 2.2% worldwide.
Revenue Projections by Prominent Brands
The bio-implants market is projected to reach $115.8 billion by 2020, registering a CAGR of 10.3% from 2014 Blue Sky Bio LLC, a bio-implants manufacturing company based in Grayslake, IL, made headlines when it announced its annual revenue of $1 to $2.5 million. Nobel Biocare’s revenue of the complete year at CER increased by 2.2% over the previous year to approximately EUR 566.8 million in 2013. The company recorded a net profit of about 46.1 million in 2012. The world’s most reputed chip maker, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., also raised several eyebrows in the bio-implants market after its net profits touched the $9 billion figure in 2015. The profits were up by 16% from 2014, along with an increase of 10.6% in revenue, reveals phys.org.

Where lies the real potential?
In the year 2013, Europe and North America, together occupied a majority of about 75% share of the bio-implants industry. Industry experts outline that the Asia-Pacific region will soon lead the sector with a significant share of about 25% by 2020. It was in 2014 that Iran made several heads turn for being the first country to manufacture the optical bio-implants. Ramezan-Ali Sadeqzadeh, the deputy head of Industrial Development & Renovation Organization (IDRO) in a statement to IRNA told that Iran will be manufacturing eighteen new bio-implant products in the country for medical uses.
Until recently many indigenous manufacturers in India were focused on offering low-cost medical devices, while big brands enjoyed a monopoly in the segment over a decade. However, times have changed and a new generation of manufacturers are flooding the Indian market. Most of these enterprises are being led by entrepreneurs, who often operate closely with investors as well as clinicians and poses global ambitions.
Some major discoveries of 2016
Discussions about some of the finest innovators of 2016 would be incomplete without mentioning the contribution of an 18-year-old innovator from Poland named Bakalarz. The innovator who has just started university together with her best friend has completely revolutionized the world of medicine by introducing a new bone-healing bio-implant. Bakalarz’s innovation is inspired by a Japanese art of folding paper as well as a stem cell technology. The duo revealed that the new bio-implant product can help the bones heal faster.
Besides this, the bio-implant products would soon help humans house their keys, wallets as well as their whole lives – within their own flesh. Recently, a candidate named Maya Shwayder tried on one of the products at the famous Cebit Fair held in Hanover. The discovery reveals that humans can now become a cyborg and easily get chipped. Echoing his sentiment about the innovation Amal Graafstra, the founder of Dangerous Things said “We are putting the power of cryptography and privacy in your hands.”

Earlier, the 3D printing technology was used to develop replicas of both man-made and natural structures, including bio-implants., metallic components and others. But with the technology getting more interesting, industry leaders eyeing the share and size, and opportunities of the bio-implants industry believe that 3D printing techniques will further revolutionize the bio-implant sector. With the new three dimensional technology, it will be easy to design, micro as well as nanoscale complex structures that are difficult to manufacture using traditional manufacturing techniques.
Besides this, biowearables and biohacking that sounded like stuffs from a thriller movie of the 90’s is now a reality with the recent developments in the market. Smartphone as well as intelligent gadgets are bleeding into our offices and homes. Moreover, with the smart home revolution gaining more momentum, several phone like features will soon be embedded into human legs, heads, and even arms applying biohacking.
