Screenless displays convey visual information without using screen or projector. This technology is emerging in the field of computer-enhanced technologies. Numerous manufacturers are endeavoring to obtain patents for their technologies regarding screenless displays. Technological developments and reduced overall costs of screenless display devices would present new opportunities.

Screenless Display Techniques:

There are three screenless display techniques:
1.    Visual Image:

Any image that an eye can perceive is included in visual image screenless display. In this technique, light reflects from an intermediate object before it reaches to retina. Virtual reality goggles and heads-up displays are examples of visual image screenless display. Moreover, hologram is the most common example of application of visual image technique. Holograms are transmitted directly or stored in devices, such as holodiscs. A holoprojector is used to access stored images in holodiscs. Google is researching to develop a visual image system that would replace screens in smartphones and tablets.

2.    Retinal Display:

Images are projected directly on retina in retinal display technique. The usage of an intermediate device for reflection is the only differentiation between visual image and retinal display techniques. Extreme privacy needs to be maintained once the computing work is done in public places. Retinal display systems project light only on retina of intended viewer in public places.

3.    Synaptic Interface:

Synaptic interface technique transmits visual information directly to brain without using light. To develop this technique, sampled video signals from horse crab eyes through their optic nerves are used along with sampled video signals from the electronic cameras into the brains of creatures. The results were successful in creatures as well as humans. Most of the companies are using this technique for communication, business, and security purposes. This technique is also known as human machine interface, mind machine interface, and direct neural interface.

Screenless Display Applications:

•    Screenless display techniques are used in manufacturing mobile phones for visually impaired or old people.
•    Development of screenless laptops would be an eco-friendly solution to increasing landfills with CRT monitors.
•    Hologram projections use screenless display to project high quality 3D images.
•    The working principle of screenless display can also be used in development of screenless TVs.

Screenless Display Advantages and Disadvantages:

Screenless display provides more accurate colors, higher resolution images, and wider angle of view. Moreover, it requires low power and provides higher levels of brightness & contrast. The features such as ability to present 3d images and far-point images enable their use in treatment of myopia. From the environment point of view, screenless display would be preferred as toxic elements such as lead, arsenic, phosphorus, mercury, and others are not used in their manufacturing process.
The cost of experiment models and prototypes of screenless display is high. The virtual retinal display (VRD) technology is not available in significant number. VRD Technology is under development.

Future Enhancements:

Companies are investing in huge amount in R&D activities of screenless display technology. Google is in process of developing a compact video camera that films everything the viewer sees, and glasses that would show information that viewer wants without screen or projector. Adobe systems are developing cross platform of various applications that can be viewed without screen. Japanese scientists invented intelligent glasses that remembers the place where people saw their keys, mobiles, and other things for the last time.

Increasing awareness and adoption of advanced technologies and growing disposable income are factors that drive screenless display market. Furthermore, emergence of virtual reality devices compatible with smartphones supplements growth. Screenless display is evolving in the field of computer technology owing to technological advancements.

Analysts studying the screenless display market have presented precise market data in research reports.
