The colorectal cancer is believed to be the third most diagnosed cancer in men and women, after skin cancer in the United States. According to the estimates presented by “American Cancer Society” about 95,270 new colorectal cancer cases is expected to be reported in 2016. The study further highlights that the number of new patients with rectal cancer will be close to 39,220 in 2016. The lifetime risk of colorectal cancer is approximately two in 24 for men and about two in 46 for women. The risk is believed to be comparatively low in women, say research analysts at Allied Market Research (AMR). Research analysts at AMR weighing upon the market size and share, demands and opportunities in the capsule endoscopy system market highlight that several other factors also affect the risk of developing colon cancer.

A Significant Drop in Death Rate

Studies carried out by the “American Cancer Society “outline that approximately 49,190 people will succumb to colorectal cancer in 2016. However, the number of deaths has dropped considerably over the past 10 years. There are various reasons for this decline as doctors say an early screening of the colorectal polyps can save life. Once identified at their initial stage, the polyps can be easily removed before they become cancerous and are easier to treat. Furthermore, the treatment for cancer has significantly improved over the past 5 to 6 years. As a result, over one million survivors in the United States alone are enjoying good health.

Potential Applications in Capsule Endoscopy System Market

The application of capsule endoscopy offers several, potential benefits over the conventional endoscopy devices. Notably, patients no longer require sedation. Many patients at a greater risk for traditional colonoscopy. This usually occurs because of the severity of the disease or age or risk of sedation. The capsule endoscopy here works as the best alternative to traditional colonoscopy. Moreover, patients requiring anticoagulation therapy will no longer have to withhold their medications before the medical examinations are complete, as often advised by the conventional colonoscopy. Thus, the less – invasive capability of these endoscopes, will increase their participation in cancer screening. The first wireless capsule endoscope was introduced in 2011 by Given Imaging Ltd. Following an approval from the Food and Drug Association in 2011, more than 1,000,000 examinations have been conducted worldwide. PillCam one of the greatest discovery in the capsule endoscopy system market is believed to benefit about 1.5 million patients.

Emerging Capsule Endoscopy Technologies

The application of capsule endoscopy in human colon has been suggested as the best alternative for colorectal cancer screening examination. Moreover, the device is also used to investigate people with different forms of colorectal pathology. The capsule device measures about 11-mn 32 mm when compared to the small – bowel device that measured approximately 11-mm 26-mm. Advancements in video – capture components at the two ends, of the device, similar to those present in esophageal device has contributed to the sales of capsule endoscopes. One of the shortcomings of the existing endoscope technology is mainly their quick migration rate, through the gastrointestinal tract.

However, a team of researchers from IIT Madras and University of Nebraska, Lincoln, have discovered an ingestible capsule that pauses at the area of interest such as ulcer or polyps. Echoing his sentiments about the recent discovery Benjamin Terry, an assistant professor at the University of Nebraska said “he capsule, made of biocompatible materials, works like a parasite by latching on to the intestinal wall”.

Advanced Studies in Capsule Endoscopy System Market
Before, capsule endoscopes are disseminated into practice, scientists believe that several key areas need to be addressed. There is a greater need for prospective research to analyze its effectiveness and limitations in screening, colorectal cancer and investigate the signs suggestive of large – bowel pathology. In addition, different aspects such as tolerability and retention rate over other screening procedures are yet to be defined. Scientists are also busy addressing the concerns about the value of the endoscope in patients with less than favored bowel preparation requirements. The time required to obtain an accurate reading from a capsule endoscope is longer than, the time required to perform an examination using a traditional endoscope. Addressing the immediate concerns would create greater opportunities for the capsule endoscopy system market

Competitive Landscape of the Capsule Endoscopy System Market

Scientists have been focusing on reducing the size of the capsule endoscopes available in the market. Sending, ant -sized device into human gastrointestinal tract is what many researchers are aiming at. In a recent incident, a team at BioMe Oxford, has designed a “Ninja “pill. The pill works by collecting microbes from the human gut and saves patients from both pain and huge investments. Priced at about $4 per pop, the pill is cheaper than current endoscopy procedures.

The endoscopy procedures today cost over $1000. Soren Thomsen, co-founder at BioMe, told the Oxford Mail, “Building a small capsule that works within your body is quite science fiction. We have to be careful not to call it a product, as it’s still very much something we are working on but if we were successful, it would be substantially different to other products out there.” Thomsen explained “The key advantage over existing technologies is that our product can sample any part of your intestines in a non-invasive manner, making it uniquely suitable for both research and diagnostic purposes.”
The technology used in capsule endoscope is limited to diagnostic. Therefore, there’s a wider scope for technology development for tissue sampling. There’s an untapped segment of video capsule for dedicated imaging. This will open new avenues for the capsule endoscopy system market.
