New automatic door applications emerge, public transport & military sector to be benefited

Considering safety as the first priority, installation of automatic door has been one of the major steps taken in residential, commercial, public transport, military, and other projects. This type of door is not a mere show-off in jewelry shops or malls that detect presence of people in front of them and open automatically to let them pass through. Technology has advanced considerably and the application of automated door has been widespread, considering not only safety but also convenience and strategical factors. From utilizing the door in compartments of trains to reduce the number of people falling from trains to utilizing it as a strategy in dog squad vehicle in case of emergency, automatic doors have becoming more than useful than before. According to the report published by Allied Market Research, the automatic door market is estimated to reach $41.74 billion by 2026. Following are some of the activities taking place in the industry.

Introducing automatic doors in local trains has been in the plans of the Western Railway of India. Taking necessary steps to take this plan forward, the organization prepared a design. The doors and control panels have been designed for few compartments of 15-coach trains. Following the trials, the system came into operation in the last week of December, 2019.  The plan was aimed at reducing the number of people who fall from trains. The implementation of automatic doors would eliminate the footboard travelling, which would lead to lesser number of people in the coaches.

According to the newspaper Mumbai Mirror, a first-class compartment, a ladies’ compartment, a general compartment, and a compartment with reserved for handicapped people featured automatic doors. A motorman has a control of these doors. Moreover, there are two emergency buttons to enable commuters to inform motorman if any crisis occurs. The Western Railway decided to take feedbacks from commuters and take the project forward.

The application of automatic door in military is growing, and one of the cases has been found in Florida. The 96th Security Forces Squadron made a considerable change in the military working dog squad car for protection of dog handler and canine companion during patrolling. The automatic door opening feature releases canine by remote control. The members of security forces possess these remotes, attached to their vests. Dog handlers utilize canines as another way of defense whenever required. This automatic door feature offers an option to a dog handler to use the feature at its discretion.

Tech Sgt. David Garver, 96th SFS kennel master, outlined that the dog handler needs to press a button for opening a door and release the dog. The training regarding door-opening automation has been carried out by the forces for canines. The forces plan to utilize dogs as backup until another patrol arrives at the scene. There has been only one 96th SFS canine patrol vehicle that is equipped with the door-popping technology. The forces have plans to apply this automatic door-popping technology in other vehicles also. Moreover, it has been planning to implement the system in its sports utility vehicle squad car.
