Medical/diagnostic imaging is used to obtain a visual representation of the interior parts of the body for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. This field has undergone a revolution with the shift from bed-side monitoring to high-end digital scanning. The information on internal structures that are covered by bones and skin is obtained for diagnosis of diseases and deformities. Identification of abnormalities is possible after establishing database of normal anatomy with physiology. Medical or diagnostic imaging can also be perceived as a solution to mathematical inverse problems, which implies that cause, i.e., the properties of living tissue can be determined from the effect, i.e., the observed signal.

Russell Witte, associate professor of the Department of Radiology at the University of Arizona, is researching on using light and sound for the improvement of medical imaging field. Despite the technological advancements, surgeons and doctors are facing difficulties while looking inside the body. In order to reduce these difficulties, researchers are working to create images that would enable surgeons and doctors to observe inside the body with ease. Witte said, “So we have the ability to look on an incredible scale to make pictures today; however, when we try to look inside the body just a millimeter or two, things become much more challenging.” His novel technique is about virtual touch allows doctors to touch below the skin. Witte and a team of researchers implemented this technique using a peer-reviewed method in which patients infected with posterior tibial tendon dysfunction were studied. The study was aimed at finding the causes of dysfunction in tendon and impacts on tendons after deformation. Researchers found that unhealthy tendons remain stiff even after the deformation and healthy tendons deform & relax.

Witte affirmed that the success of this technique on tendons gives rise to possibility of using it for other body parts. “We’re doing things with the liver … cardiac, breast imaging,” Witte said. “People have even used this to look at micromotion in the brain.” Most of the times, he used a light technique known as photoacoustic effect. Orbital absorption is used in this technique to illuminate particular areas of the body.

Orbital absorption is defined as the capture and transformation of energy in molecules. The captured energy provides a particular color of light depending on the type of substance. This technology has been used all over the world and he hoped that this technology would be adopted over the period of time. The portable technologies, such as EEG, portable ultrasounds, and others are helping doctors and surgeons throughout the world. Similarly, Witte is also trying to develop it into a portable technology. The complexity of his research was an essential part to mark differentiability of this technique.

A report published on the medical/diagnostic imaging market states that the market would reach $45 billion by 2022 and expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.1% from 2016 to 2022. Analysts studying the industry have presented a comprehensive analysis of changing market dynamics, value chain analysis of key manufacturers, drivers & opportunities, and competitive scenario.
