The 21st century is often referred to as the ‘Digital Age’ since digital technologies have penetrated almost every sphere of human life. This has led to the birth of digital identities and data has become the foundation stone of these digital identities. Geopolitical experts aren’t wrong when they refer to data as “the new oil”. Data has become the most important commodity in today’s world and is the basic raw material for all industries.

With the emergence of cloud technologies, the role of data in empowering different businesses has further increased. Naturally, the need to protect cloud data from external threats and attacks has become extremely necessary. This has led to the advent of cloud data security solutions. Cloud data security can be defined as the use of technologies, policies, and procedures to develop security solutions for protecting data from external and internal threats and human errors.

What are the pillars of cloud data security?

The expanse of cloud technology and cloud connectivity has increased exponentially in the last few years. As a result, ensuring cloud security is becoming difficult with each passing day. To ensure data security, technology experts in the cloud data security industry have laid down certain guiding principles and best practices that ensure full-proof data protection. One such guiding principle is that of identity access management. As the name suggests, identity access management helps in creating a perimeter around the data and allowing data access only to those who are authorized. This improves the overall security of the organization and reduces the chance of data leaks.

The next important principle is encryption; encryption ensures that the data remains confidential and that the authenticity and integrity of the data remain intact. Cloud security makes use of three types of encryption methodologies- encryption in transit, encryption at rest, and encryption in use. Encryption in transit entails data encryption while it is being sent from a cloud server to an end-user. Encryption at rest makes sure that the data remains safe while it is stored on the cloud server, while encryption in use ensures that the data remains encrypted while it is being processed.

Along with these two principles, threat monitoring and data privacy & compliance are two important best practices that help in securing data from cyberattacks. Continuous and real-time threat monitoring helps organizations anticipate and counter malicious actions. Also, threat monitoring improves the threat intelligence-gathering capabilities of the organization. On the other hand, compliance with data security regimes ensures that the privacy of data users remains intact. Automated security testing is also a pivotal cloud security principle; through continuous scanning for threats during software development, automated security testing guarantees that the software thus developed is secure from external threats.

Why is North America at the forefront of developing various cloud security solutions?

The North America cloud data security industry is predicted to be the most dominant in the 2023-2032 period. There are several reasons behind the growth of this industry; firstly, there is a rising number of cyberattacks across the entire region. This has put the information technology companies in this region at risk. As a result, there is a surge in demand from these companies for sophisticated and robust cloud security solutions. In response to this demand, various cloud security-providing companies have been established in the past few years which has helped the region to dominate the industry.

Role of private players in the expansion of the industry

The proactive role played by private companies in the IT & telecom sector is the main reason why the cloud security industry has expanded to such a large extent. Many private companies have launched cloud security solutions and platforms to cater to the increasing demand of various industries.

For instance, in March 2021, IBM, a multinational information technology company, announced the launch of new cloud security services designed keeping in mind the changing nature of cybersecurity threats. IBM released a statement saying that the new service will help organizations to effectively manage their cloud security strategies in hybrid cloud environments.

Similarly, in August 2021, Datadog Inc., a cloud application monitoring platform, announced that it was launching a cloud security solution viz., Datadog Cloud Security Platform. The product is in line with the company’s focus on offering cloud monitoring services. The platform has been designed to help organizations with new security insights and provide them with tools so that they can identify potential threats much earlier.

To sum it up, cloud security has become one of the most important domains in today’s digital era wherein every industrial process is data-driven. According to IT experts, there are certain best practices that, if followed, help bring down the risk of cybersecurity attacks. Adhering to these principles, the private sector has played a proactive role and launched several cloud security platforms which have augmented the growth rate of the industry.
