Recently, Terranova Software, a leading sustainable solutions developer, conducted a study that highlighted that households that shifted to smart meters were able to bring down their electricity usage by 2.8% and gas consumption by around 2%. Ultimately, this helped the domestic sector to reduce carbon emissions, thereby minimizing the negative impact of the energy generation industry on the global environment. The research further stated that the government in Uzbekistan had initiated a pilot project to facilitate the transition toward smart electricity meters. As per leading environmentalists, this scheme is estimated to cut down emissions by about 60 million tons of carbon dioxide in the near future.
The increased investments by private companies in green infrastructure initiatives have contributed to the growth of the smart electricity meters industry. Many leading businesses have launched innovative products to cater to the evolving demands of the sector and expand their footprint in the industry. For instance, in May 2024, Oakter, an electronics manufacturer in Uttar Pradesh, India, unveiled OAKMETER, an advanced energy meter. Designed specifically for the utilities sector, the product is powered by IoT and real-time data analytics technologies to identify and detect tampering and electricity theft. The 4G connectivity and low latency features offered by the device enable two-way communication with the server, thus improving the operational efficiency of the grid. Furthermore, the outage identification capabilities help power distribution companies ensure peak functionality and handle power loads effectively.
