Highlights:
Broaching machines are specialized tools that are used to remove materials from a workpiece continuously and precisely. Broaching is a machining process that uses a toothed tool, called a broach, to remove materials. It is a versatile and effective metal-cutting process used to create intricate shapes and precise internal features in various workpieces. Broaching is beneficial for high-quantity production processes where precision machining is required, especially for unusual structures and shapes.
A wide range of broaching machines used for various industrial applications
Vertical broaching machines are one of the popular forms of cutting tools that are mainly categorized into two types, including pull-type and push-type machines. These machines are designed for platform or pit operations and are more space-efficient than their horizontal counterparts. Additionally, modern vertical broaches utilize hydraulic and electro-mechanical drives for enhanced performance.
On the other hand, horizontal broaching machines feature a bed or base nearly twice the length of the broaching stroke, accommodating the broach pilot and drive mechanism for pulling the broach. It is commonly used for machining keyways, splines, slots, round holes, and various contours, making it ideal for precision shaping in industrial applications.
Furthermore, surface broaching machines utilize tools fixed to rams that move linearly across a workpiece. These cutting-edge tools work both in a horizontal and vertical manner. When a machine features one ram moving horizontally and another vertically, it's known as a duplex broach. This setup allows for more complex cuts in a single pass, increasing efficiency and precision.
Moreover, rotary broaching machines include table-top rotary broaching machines that enable simultaneous rotation of both the broach tool and the workpiece. They also use CNC technology that offers precise control over movements.
A look into the penetration of broaching machines across various industries
The broaching machine industry has witnessed significant growth due to the increasing applications of these advanced tools across multiple sectors. Broaching is extensively used in the automotive industry for manufacturing components like gears, shafts, axles, and spline shafts. The precision and efficiency of broaching make it ideal for producing the intricate shapes required in automotive engineering.
Similarly, on the other hand, the aerospace industry relies on broaching to manufacture key components like turbine blades, engine parts, and aerospace gears. With the rising stringent requirements for precision and reliability in aerospace applications, broaching machines have come up with the ability to create intricate, high-tolerance parts, which is essential. It ensures that every component adheres to the precise standards necessary for safe and efficient aircraft operation.
Furthermore, broaching plays an important role in medical equipment and implant production, driven by the growing demand for precision. It ensures that intricate components are manufactured with improved tolerances, which is important for the functionality and safety of medical devices. This process enables manufacturers to meet strict quality standards in the medical field.
Also, firearms manufacturing relies on these advanced machines to create enhanced features, such as rifling inside gun barrels. The precision of the broaching process directly impacts the accuracy and overall performance of firearms. This makes broaching an essential technique for achieving the high standards required in firearms production.
Pilot Precision and Global CNC combined forces to enhance broaching capabilities
In December 2023, Pilot Precision Products, a leading provider of cutting tools and duMONT CNC motorized slotters collaborated with Global CNC, a renowned manufacturer of static and driven tool holders. Through this agreement, the companies aimed to provide solutions that enable efficient and stable broaching on vertical and horizontal machining centers that are manufactured by Okuma, DMG MORI, and others.
This collaboration has allowed Pilot to combine its broaching expertise with the machine tool interfaces so that customers using the motorized slotters are able to increase the versatility of their machining centers and enhance productivity. According to Eric Hagopian, the CEO of Pilot, the company aimed to expand the use of its motorized slotters that interface perfectly with Global CNC’s live tooling for slotting.
Final words
Broaching machines have emerged as a significant innovation that has enhanced the ingenuity and precision achievable in modern metalworking. Furthermore, their versatility, efficiency, and ability to produce intricate shapes make them a valuable asset in various industries, such as automotive, aerospace, and healthcare. Moreover, the rising trend toward customization in metalworking is expected to create wider growth opportunities for the industry in the coming years.
