Around the same time, researchers from a Japanese university published findings on using enzymes to make high-purity ferulic acid from plant waste, offering an alternative way to produce it. 

On the regulatory context, there have also been discussions in North America around labeling standards for antioxidant ingredients in over-the-counter skincare products. Although no major policy change has occurred, regulatory bodies are considering clearer guidelines around the purity and stability claims of ingredients like ferulic acid, especially when marketed in combination with other actives.  

The Asia-Pacific region is a hub of activity, when it comes to food applications. A South Korean food-tech company recently launched a pilot project to integrate ferulic acid extracted from barley husks into ready-to-eat meal packaging as a natural preservative layer.
