Highlights:
The growing global population and the increasing pace of industrialization have surged the demand for electricity from residential as well as commercial spaces. At the same time, the transition toward renewable energy has led to the rising adoption of solar power for domestic and industrial purposes. After signing the Paris Climate Accords in 2015, many governments around the world have started investing in solar photovoltaic cells to reduce the carbon footprint of their national economy. Moreover, local authorities in these provinces have kickstarted initiatives to integrate rooftop solar PV technology into smart city projects that have been implemented in their major urban areas.
Rising popularity of rooftop solar PV technology in metropolitan cities
The increased adoption of rooftop solar PV panels by households in industrial towns and metropolitan cities has led to many companies developing new technologies to improve their energy efficiency and quality. For instance, the advent of smart solar PV cells has completely transformed the industry. These panels are embedded with advanced sensors and IoT devices that help in real-time monitoring, maintenance, and repair. Furthermore, the downtime associated with these panels is also significantly reduced as detecting the problems becomes easier. Naturally, the lifespan of smart solar cells is much longer than conventional ones.
Along with this, the interconnectivity features offered by IoT devices help in creating a network of connected energy infrastructure. Similarly, automation and data analytics technology are being integrated to improve the rate of energy production drastically. Many enterprises have developed solar panels that are able to track the orientation of sun rays and adjust their own angles accordingly to enhance the power output.
In the recent past, the concept of solar energy trading has also emerged which allows entities to transact in carbon credits. Under the system, peer-to-peer borrowing and lending of carbon credits is possible between different producers, system operators, and consumers, without any intermediaries. Many platforms and applications have been developed that help in facilitating such transactions. However, in the past few years, the growing risk of cyberattacks and malicious threats has led to many companies opting for blockchain technology. The decentralized, secure, and transparent ledger system has made it possible to design virtual power plants that can facilitate the powering of microgrids at the local level without any disruptions. Various studies have also shown that deploying blockchain technology has improved the operation efficiency and predictive maintenance capabilities of rooftop solar PV networks.
Emergence of bifacial and flexible solar panels transforming the industry
In the past few years, the development of bifacial panels has completely revolutionized the rooftop solar PV industry. Since these solar plates can capture sunlight from both sides, the total energy produced is much more than traditional cells. Furthermore, these solutions can convert diffused or reflected sunlight into electricity. This further increases the power output of the bifacial PV panels and makes them ideal for geographical regions where the weather is generally cloudy, and the sunlight is not so strong. Even in polar or high-altitude areas where the snow-covered surfaces are highly reflective, these advanced two-sided solar cells are perfect for maximizing energy output. The high durability and longevity of these panels have increased their applicability in different public infrastructure projects.
Recently, a group of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed an ultra-thin solar power fabric. Thinner than human hair, these flexible solar panels can be fixed on any surface to turn it into a power source. The cost of deploying this material is much lesser compared to conventional rooftop solar PVs. Also, these textiles are easily transportable which makes them a popular choice in remote areas with hilly terrain.
Pahal Solar and Tata Power creating new growth and investment opportunities
In recent times, many private enterprises have launched innovative products that maximize the power output drastically. In June 2024, Pahal Solar, a PV technology developer, unveiled a 595 Wp TOPCon bifacial solar cell. With front-side efficiencies ranging between 21-23%, the back side can generate power up to 30% additional power. Furthermore, the operating temperature range of the product is from -40°C to 85°C, which makes it suitable for energy generation in almost all climatic conditions.
In July 2024, Tata Power, an electricity distribution company, announced the launch of the ‘Ghar Ghar Solar’ initiative in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Under the program, residents of the city will be provided with advanced rooftop solar solutions, and the consumers can avail subsidy benefits of up to Rs.1,08,000. The press statement released by the company stated that the policy is in line with Tata Power’s commitment to provide clean energy to the domestic sector. Such product launches and initiatives are expected to strengthen the position of the industry significantly in the coming period.
To conclude, the growing demand for electricity from residential and industrial spaces has popularized the idea of rooftop solar PV technology. Furthermore, the transition toward renewable and green energy has brought numerous investment opportunities in the sector. Finally, several technological advancements in the landscape are predicted to create favorable conditions for growth.
