Conveyor belts have numerous applications in mining, quarrying, and manufacturing industries. Material handling and distribution companies also employ conveyor belt systems regularly. Warehousing and logistics support infrastructure is another area where conveyor belts are highly useful in simplifying the operations.

Advancements in conveyor belt technology

A typical conveyor belt consists of a closed loop of fabric running over two or more pulleys which keep rotating. Since the start of the 19th century when these systems were first used, conveyor belts have undergone a lot of changes. Both the machinery running the systems has evolved and the fabric or the belt material, too, has changed significantly. There are primarily three technologies which power today’s conveyor belt systems. Direct driver technology is one such technology. This technology is primarily used to reduce the gearing in the systems and make them simpler and compact, without compromising on its strength and robustness.

Active conveyor belt technology is different from direct driver technology in that it focusses on ensuring efficient positioning of the load. For this, it uses multiple rollers fitted with actuators which makes the system compact and effective in positioning the load. The third technology that has been growing in popularity is the smart conveyor technology. This is the most innovative of all technologies as it makes use of advanced motion control technology with the help of real-time programming.

Apart from these technologies, belts are increasingly manufactured using polymers and reinforced fabrics. These materials make the belts durable and resistant to wear and tear. Use of intelligent monitoring systems and automated maintenance solutions helps in tackling issues of misalignment and debris accumulation. Innovative safety switches and emergency stop systems are also being used to enhance the safety and performance of these systems.

Future growth opportunities in the market

The global conveyor belt market is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 4.9% during the 2023-2032 period. Several factors are aiding in the expansion of the market. Firstly, wide use of conveyor belts in pharmaceuticals and consumer products manufacturing is expected to push the growth rate of the market significantly. The rising adoption of automation in warehouses might also lend a helping hand in creating significant investment opportunities in the industry. An interesting factor coming into play is the strengthening of the e-commerce sector. This has boosted the demand for conveyor belts from e-commerce companies for efficient distribution and delivery of the products.

Apart from these direct factors, two factors have indirectly supported the growth of the market. Rising demand for mined products has led to an upsurge in demand for conveyor belts in mines and quarries. The second indirect factor is the strategic alliances between the major companies in the industry. These alliances including acquisitions, mergers, partnerships, and collaborations have led to proliferation of the market into different parts of the globe. For instance, Continental AG, in July 2022, announced the acquisition of NorrVulk AB, a conveyor belt manufacturing company in Sweden. As per the company’s statement, this acquisition by Continental AG will help the company to expand its presence in Sweden.

The conveyor belt is, thus, predicted to surge ahead in the next few years due to increasing applicability in different sectors. Also, technological advancements in conveyor belt systems will play a huge role in multiplying the opportunities available to the market.
