The automotive tire industry is a key part of the transportation sector. Tires are essential for vehicles and provide safety, control, and comfort. They are available in different types based on diverse vehicles, including automobiles, trucks, and motorcycles. Tires are made from natural and synthetic rubber, along with wire and fabric. They are mounted on rims and help in moving the power of a vehicle to the ground. Proper traction provided by tires would guarantee that the drivers operate their vehicles smoothly and efficiently.
There are many firms that manufacture tires. These companies create tires in various sizes and designs to fit different vehicles and driving conditions. Over the years, technology has improved tire performance, making them safer and longer lasting. But the demand for tires is expanding. This is because of increased vehicle ownership worldwide. More humans are buying cars, which means there is a need for more tires. Along with this, growing environmental issues are leading people toward using environmentally friendly tires to reduce the pollution level. So, the automotive tire industry has become more important in keeping vehicles safe on the road.
According to a recent report released by Allied Market Research, the automotive tire market is anticipated to exhibit a significant CAGR of 3.8% throughout the forecast period.
The role of IoT and nanotechnology in tire manufacturing
Nowadays, manufacturing companies are increasingly adopting automation to enhance productivity and boost profits, fueled by rapid technological advancements. In the automotive tire sector, significant growth is expected owing to innovative developments in tire technology. These consist of rimless tires, green tires, and the use of lightweight materials such as alloys, carbon fiber, and advanced composites like manganese bronze and nickel-aluminum bronze.
On the other hand, tire companies use advanced technologies such as nanotechnology and smart software to come up with better tires. For instance, Bridgestone uses CAIS, which is Contact Area Information Sensing technology that provides information about road conditions based on the analysis of a tire's contact area.
It is worth noting that the future of transportation is transformed by the rise of shared and autonomous vehicles. Ride-sharing and ride-hailing services are becoming increasingly popular for facilitating the movement of people and goods in cities. Major tire companies such as Bridgestone, Goodyear, Michelin, and Continental, are exploring IoT-based sensors and software platforms to monitor tire quality.
Smart tires, connected through IoT, are the primary focus for manufacturers. These tires improve safety, boost efficiency, reduce maintenance costs and extend the life of the tire. Therefore, these technological advancements are creating new avenues for the automotive tire industry to grow in the coming years.
Sumitomo Rubber Industries partnered with GDSO to improve tire traceability
Sumitomo Rubber Industries joined the Global Data Service Organization for Tires and Automotive Components, which was launched in January 2023 to assist with tire identification and management systems development that begins with truck and bus tires. GDSO aims to standardize tire data and offer solutions to their access and exchange.
The Tire Information Service (TIS), created by GDSO facilitates tire data transfer through unique item identifiers. As an active participant, Sumitomo helps to define industry standards and develop an RFID-based database for its tire products.
RFID technology enhances traceability, improves quality control, addresses customer claims and combats counterfeit tires. It is expected to streamline warehouse inventory, ensure safety, and track tire manufacturing, installation, and servicing. Sumitomo plans to utilize RFID in the coming years for deep analysis of tire data, enabling high-value services such as retreading and maintenance, which further increase operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.
To sum up, the automotive tire industry is experiencing growth due to increased vehicle ownership and demand for eco-friendly tires. Technological advancements like IoT, nanotechnology, and smart tires offer profitable opportunities for industry expansion. These innovations enhance safety, fuel efficiency and tire longevity while also reducing maintenance costs and improving customer satisfaction.
