The Entertainment Software Association conveyed that in the U.S., consumer expenses on video games reached $60.4 billion in 2021, which is an 8% increase from 2020, while spending on content grew by 7% (in 2021). The free-to-play games approach uses a large player base to sustain ongoing development and operational costs, ensuring the game remains accessible over time. Thus, online microtransactions not only enable profitability in free-to-play games but also encourage continuous player engagement through a sustainable monetization strategy.
