The automotive steering systems have remained unchanged for the last past few years. But, thanks to the advent of smart technology, from mobile phones to automobiles, every electric and mechanical device is getting an upgradation. This upgradation involves the development of the manual steering systems into a power assist steering system.
The development of the automobile industry, especially in Asia countries such as India has boosted over the last few years. The surge in demand for automotive, increase in need for motor vehicles, and rise in disposable income are some of the reasons behind the rapid growth in the India automotive industry. According to Allied Market Research, the India automotive steering system market is projected to reach $10.04 billion by 2024, registering a CAGR of 9.0% from 2019 to 2026.
While the industry is ruled by the power assist steering system, the question arises, what’s next in the business? The power steering systems have been advancing toward several advancements in the digital direction. Although people loved to talk about electronic control systems, only today the manufacturers are thinking seriously about it. The future of automotive steering systems would lead to adaptive steering and steer-by-wire system.
What is the adaptive steering system?
Ford has been at the forefront of the adaptive steering system, launching its Edge model in 2016. However, other market players including Audi, BMW, Lexus are also working to develop most effective adaptive steering system.
The adaptive steering systems finds similarities with steer-by-wire, but what differs adaptive steering is that it depends on electronic systems to adapt to the dynamic factors that might affect stability. It is operated by changing the ratio of the driver’s actions and at the rack depending on the vehicle’s speed. Moreover, adaptive steering permits easy maneuverability at lower speeds by changing steering to the road wheel. On the other hand, driver input is processed more quickly at higher speeds, which allows steering to react more precisely to the driver’s action.
What is a steer-by-wire system?
Under the drive-by-wire umbrella, steer-by-wire technology refers to the digital power steering system that replaces the traditional physical steering system. The most automotive used to have a rack and pinion or worm and sector gear to maneuver the vehicle. These were the physical components that controlled the steering system. On the other hand, with steer-by-wire, such physical controls are replaced by sensors that communicate with the power steering regarding the actions taken by the driver at the wheel. Moreover, one will not need a traditional steering wheel to control a steel-by-wire system and the system could increase the space under the hood, which would ultimately reduce vibration and save fuel economy.
In today’s era, it is vital to address the power steering system to maintain a foothold in the market. This would convey to your customers that you are staying ahead of the curve and would launch more automobile steering system which includes EPS sensor technology. Although adapting to new technology is not a simple task, it would need special training and willingness from employees to adapt to changing markets. However, the sooner you start to adopt power steering systems, the better results you would get.
