The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) in India announced that it would add 25,000 new buses over five years, with a significant number powered by CNG and LNG. This decision reflects a move toward reducing air pollution and managing operational costs. LNG buses are known to produce less nitrogen oxide and particulate matter than diesel, which is helpful for cities struggling with air quality. Although not all 25,000 buses will run on LNG, the scale of this plan clearly shows the rising importance of LNG engines in the public transport sector.

Expansion of LNG Use in Shipping

In marine transportation, LNG engines are also gaining attention. Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), a major shipping company in Japan, recently ordered an LNG-fueled very large gas carrier (VLGC). This ship will be chartered to a Japanese oil company once it is delivered. The use of LNG in such large vessels shows how shipbuilders and shipping companies are responding to increasing pressure to lower emissions. LNG engines help reduce carbon dioxide and sulfur emissions, which aligns with international maritime emission guidelines. By using LNG, operators can meet environmental regulations more easily while maintaining operational efficiency.

Benefits Driving the Adoption of LNG Engines

LNG engines are appreciated for their performance and environmental advantages. Compared to conventional fuels, LNG produces less greenhouse gas when burned. This makes it suitable for use in industries that are facing strict emission norms. LNG also provides a quieter and smoother engine operation, especially in buses, which can improve the travel experience in urban transport systems. In ships, the use of LNG engines can reduce maintenance needs due to cleaner combustion, potentially saving long-term costs. The LNG engine industry is expected to gather a revenue of $10.7 billion by 2033. The market accounted for $5.4 billion in 2023 and is projected to rise at a CAGR of 7.1% during 2024-2033.

Challenges in Infrastructure and Supply

Despite the benefits, one major limitation to the wider use of LNG engines is the need for proper infrastructure. Refueling stations, storage facilities, and supply chains need to be developed for both road and marine applications. LNG needs to be stored at extremely low temperatures, which requires special equipment and trained personnel. For countries and companies considering LNG engine adoption, these factors can increase the initial setup cost and planning requirements.

Recent Moves Indicating Growing Confidence

MOL choosing to invest in an LNG-powered ship and MSRTC deciding to use LNG buses show that more people trust this technology. These are big decisions with many vehicles and valuable equipment involved. It means major companies now believe LNG engines are reliable and useful. This could inspire other companies to try LNG engines for trucks, ships, and buses.

Ongoing Transition, Not Sudden Change

The shift to LNG engines is not expected to happen overnight. Diesel and petrol engines still dominate in most places, and switching involves technical, financial, and training efforts. However, early adopters are showing that LNG is not just a future option—it is already being used today. More companies might start trying LNG-powered vehicles and ships before fully switching to them. With the increase in desired results, LNG engines could gradually become common in transport and shipping.
