For businesses working on large construction projects or handling debris from a home renovation, proper disposal of waste is a major concern. They require a dedicated device or method of removing waste from their site. Dumpers provide a convenient and safe way to discard debris before they reach a landfill. A dumper is a type of motor vehicle that is particularly designed to transport material. This is the reason why they are used in the construction industry for transporting materials, soil, waste, and rubble quickly and easily. These vehicles are usually powered by a diesel engine, however, with technological advancements they are now powered with electric motors, hydraulics, and some are also manually operated.

Popular construction dumpers benefiting modern construction

Dumpers are essential pieces of machinery that are designed to haul heavy loads of materials such as gravel or waste. They are mainly of two types including articulated and rigid dumpers. Articulated dumpers have the power, durability, and flexibility to assist operators in their construction activities irrespective of weather and terrain. These machines have two separate parts. One that houses the carriage element and the other consisting of an engine and driving position. Articulated dumpers are broadly used for many areas of construction, such as landscaping, site clearing, new developments, highway maintenance and construction, utilities installation, and more. Due to their wide applicability, the articulated dumper segment of the construction dumper industry is expected to generate a revenue of $8049.0 million from 2023 to 2032.

On the other hand, rigid dumpers are designed with a rigid frame and a dump body that can tip to upload materials. These machines allow dumpers to transport large quantities of abrasive materials and rocks. They have a fixed chassis that the vehicle and the dump body sit on. These rigid haulers are best suited to inclines of 15% or less but have a job life of a minimum of five years due to their ability to hold such a high capacity of materials.

A leap toward sustainability - JCB’s electric three-ton site dumpers

In February 2024, JCB, the leading manufacturer & supplier of heavy construction equipment unveiled its new all-electric site dumper, namely, the 3TE at a launch event in Staffordshire, Northwest England. This newly designed dumper is powered by lithium-ion technology and designed to work indoors and in emissions and noise-sensitive areas. This vehicle is a more powerful version of the already available electric one-ton1TE. A few key features of this electric vehicle include zero emissions, low noise levels, fast charge capability, full shift operation, and swivel-tip skip design to enable loading and unloading in confined spaces.

The 3TE site dumper is a durable and compact machine with a full steel skip and heavy-duty articulated chassis. The machine dispenses with hydraulic pump and engine featured in the diesel powered 3T-2 model and comes with an electric motor that connects to a drop box, providing full-time all-wheel drive. The power is supplied with a 20kWh lithium-ion battery pack, capable of providing full shift operation in normal use. The batteries can be recharged from conventional site electrical supplies, with 110V and 230V cables available.

Pioneering strategies by industry leaders driving cutting-edge innovations

To produce high-quality, purpose-built equipment, several leading players in this landscape have made profitable alliances. For instance, in May 2024, Oshkosh Corporation, an American industrial company announced its acquisition of AUSA, a privately held international manufacturer of wheeled dumpers, and other equipment for material handling, agriculture, landscape, and specialty equipment industries. This acquisition would support Oshkosh Corporation to expand its product offerings by combining AUSA’s advanced technology capabilities and robust training, support, and service infrastructure. Oshkosh aimed to produce advanced and purpose-built equipment for high-quality construction, broadening its reach in both current and adjacent markets.

On the other hand, in January 2024, Hitachi Construction Machinery collaborated with ABB, a pioneering technology leader to create a fully electric dump truck for heavy duty mining operation. This prototype has already undergone initial in-factory testing, the Kansanshi copper-gold mine in Zambia where the demonstration and final testing program will be performed later in mid-2024. This project was initiated in 2021 with the goal to meet the growing demand for electric dump trucks in the mining sector and help decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Under this project, by utilizing ABB’s innovative battery technology and highly efficient DC converters, Hitachi Construction Machinery trucks are being transformed from diesel to full electric battery operation. These dump trucks use a new onboard electric that draws energy from a trolley supply to power the motor directly as well as charging a battery storage system, enabling continuous operation of trucks with no charging breaks.

To wrap up, the rapid surge in global infrastructure, residential, and commercial construction due to population growth is expected to create lucrative opportunities for the construction dumper industry. Moreover, the expansion of the mining sector is predicted to foster the growth of the landscape in the coming years.
