Radioactive material packaging is referred to as containers designed for the secure transportation and storage of radioactive materials. The packaging solutions are manufactured to prevent any leakage of radioactive materials while offering coverage to protect individuals from the hazardous impact of ionizing radiation and ensure environmental safety.
Types of radioactive material packaging:
Type A packaging:
Type A Packaging is utilized for transporting small quantities of radioactive materials with higher concentrations of radioactivity as compared to those shipped in industrial packaging. These containers are usually made of materials like wood, fiberboard, and steel, and contain an inner containment vessel manufactured from plastic, metal, or glass. These vessels are surrounded with rubber, vermiculite, and polyethene.
Materials transported through Type A Packages involve radioactive waste, nuclear medicines (radiopharmaceuticals), and radioactive sources utilized in industrial applications. Type A packaging, along with its radioactive contents, must comply with standard testing requirements. These tests are designed to ensure that the package maintains its containment integrity and shielding under normal transportation conditions.
Type B packaging:
Type B Packaging is used for transporting materials having the highest levels of radioactivity. Examples of materials transported in Type B packaging include high-level radioactive waste, spent nuclear fuel, and substantial concentrations of other radioactive substances like cobalt and cesium.
The packaging is strictly tested with a series of tests involving severe accident scenarios for the assurance of safety. These simulations involve extensive performance testing and comprehensive engineering analysis.
As per the analysis by Allied Market Research, the radioactive material packaging market is expected to manifest a notable CAGR of 5.1% during the forecast period of 2023 to 2032. The market across Africa is expected to showcase a notable CAGR of 16.9% by 2032. On the other hand, Mexico is anticipated to gain a second position with 10.4% throughout the forecast timeframe. By type, the type A segment is expected to garner a revenue of $206.8 million during the forecast period. However, type B and other segments would collectively generate a revenue of $241.5 million throughout the forecast timeframe.
The industry is gaining momentum due to a rising demand for advanced packaging technologies and protective packaging materials from the chemical sector.
The American Safety Authority approved Orano's TN Eagle Nuclear Packaging on 28th November 2023
Orano has secured transport authorization from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the American safety authority. This approval marks a crucial milestone for Orano’s ongoing commercial and industrial advancements, aiming to serve customers in the United States.
Orano's TN Eagle represents the forefront of packaging technology, designed to securely transport and store ‘spent fuel’ from nuclear power plants across the globe, including those in the United States, Asia, and Europe. Its inventive design and adaptable structure cater to the varied requirements of power plant operators, enhancing both safety measures and competitiveness in the industry.
To conclude, it can be stated that the radioactive materials packaging industry is experiencing significant growth with an expansion of the nuclear sector and growing awareness regarding hazardous materials transport. It is expected to flourish even more in the upcoming years.
