Key takeaways:

  • Introduction
  • Applicability of automotive fuel cells in the logistics industry
  • Innovative product launches

One of the major problems faced by humans today is the rising pace of climate change which has led to issues of melting of polar ice caps, rising sea levels, desertification, and loss of animal and plant biodiversity. The growing volume of carbon emissions by almost all sectors of the global economy, especially the automotive and transportation sector, has been the biggest reason behind the increasing rate of global warming.

Traditional internal combustion engines which run on conventional fossil fuels release harmful greenhouse gases that not only pollute the air but also cause various health problems, including respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological diseases. Over the last few decades, the awareness regarding environmental sustainability and healthy lifestyles has increased, leading to a surge in demand for green mobility solutions such as automotive fuel cells. At the same time, governments, private companies, and civil societies have also started promoting innovative technologies that reduce the carbon footprint of the industry.

Growing focus on sustainable logistics bringing in numerous growth opportunities

Automotive fuel cells are devices that convert chemical energy from different fuels, primarily hydrogen into electricity. The electric current generated through this process is then used to power the automobile. The process of energy generation involves the combustion of oxygen along with the compressed fuel, i.e., hydrogen, which results in water vapor as a byproduct. Hence, these fuel-cell vehicles are considered to be a sustainable alternative to conventional cars and trucks.

In the last few years, the demand for these automotive fuel cells has increased drastically from people across the globe. Initially, fuel cell-powered passenger and light commercial vehicles gained popularity, while heavy trucks and buses were slower to receive recognition. The rising focus of supply chain management and logistics companies on environmental sustainability and eco-friendly transportation has played a major role in the rising preference for fuel-cell industrial trucks and buses. One major reason behind the rising adoption of these advanced mobility systems is the high range offered by FCVs. Compared to electric vehicles which have recently been launched, hydrogen fuel cell trucks provide higher efficiency regarding usage times which makes them ideal for logistics agents who travel long distances to deliver goods and services. Moreover, while EVs require around 5 hours to fully charge, automotive fuel cell systems can be refueled in less than five minutes.

Electric vehicles offer several advantages over traditional internal combustion engines running on fossil fuels. However, one major disadvantage pointed out by automotive experts is that EV batteries aren’t as powerful as fuels like oil, petroleum, coal, etc. This drawback is addressed in fuel cell trucks as hydrogen has the highest energy content among all fuels by weight. Research in automobile engineering has shown that these trucks consume just 40-60% of energy as compared to traditional vehicles, thus reducing fuel consumption drastically.

Huge investments from multinational automotive corporations boosting the industry’s revenue

The automotive fuel cell industry accounted for $0.3 billion in 2023 and is predicted to gather a sum of $12.6 billion by 2033, rising at a CAGR of 45.7% during 2024-2033. Many leading automotive companies have started funding R&D projects related to hydrogen fuel cell trucks. For example, in July 2024, Daimler Truck, a leading heavy-duty truck manufacturing company, announced that it has initiated customer trials of Mercedes-Benz GenH2 trucks in partnership with its clients, including Amazon, INEOS Group Limited, Holcim Group, etc. Daimler Truck, in its press release, highlighted that the company joined a collaboration with its clients as they have practical experience in long-distance transport, which is likely to help the truck manufacturer gain unique insights into the utility of its product.

On the other hand, several material and chemical companies, too, have developed technologies to facilitate a smooth transition toward green mobility. For instance, KION Group, a material handling equipment manufacturer, unveiled a fuel cell system for industrial trucks in November 2023. The new 24-volt equipment developed for warehouse trucks generates electricity directly from the hydrogen fuel without producing any harmful emissions. As per many industry experts, the demand for this device is anticipated to grow in the coming period due to the increasing emphasis on eco-friendly supply chain management.

Summing up, the automotive fuel cell industry is predicted to experience huge growth in the near future on account of the increasing awareness regarding environmental sustainability. Moreover, the growing emphasis on green mobility solutions by leading logistics companies is expected to contribute to the expansion of the market in the near future.
