Obesity is a common health problem among all. In order to control the daily calorie intake, people have started preferring low calorie food products, which in turn, has boosted the demand for low calorie chocolate bars. In order to fulfill the growing demand, manufacturers have started to use low calorie sweeteners, also called as artificial sweeteners or sugar substitutes, in many beverages and foods such as yogurt, candies, frozen desserts, chewing gum, puddings, baked goods, and so on.

Even though low calorie sweeteners have similar or more intensity of sweetness per gram like sugar, they contain very few calories than sugar. This is why, they can be used in smaller amounts to get the same level of sweetness as sugar. Foods & beverages containing low calorie sweeteners are labeled as ‘sugar free’.

For instance, CADBURY UK has launched a low calorie Dairy Milk bar that contains 30% less sugar. The product claims to taste exactly the same as the original. Similarly, Nestle has launched lower sugar versions of KitKat Aero, and Smarties. The company altered the molecular structure of sugar to contain air so that they can use less sugar content but the tongue can still sense the same level of sweetness.

According to a report published by Allied Market Research, the low calorie chocolate market size is anticipated to reach $2.1 billion with a considerable CAGR from 2021 to 2030. Numerous factors such as, rise in disposable income, rise in health consciousness, increase in prevalence of obesity, surge in awareness regarding the availability of low calorie chocolates, and so on.

However, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic implemented strict lockdown worldwide, which resulted to temporary closure of all manufacturing facilities of chocolates. Also, the pandemic led to a significant decline in the sales of low calorie chocolates. The supply chain was disrupted at the same time, due to which, transporting raw materials as well as final products became a major challenge. These factors in turn, hampered the growth of the global low calorie chocolate market to some extent.

Nevertheless, Europe is currently holding the highest market share, owing to high demand of low calorie chocolate in the region. The Asia-Pacific region, at the same time, is expected to grow at the fastest rate, due to large population base. With this drift on board, the global low calorie chocolate market is likely to gather greater growth prospects in the near future.
