ABB, the pioneer in automation, recently released its novel Distributed Control System (DCS) 800xA 6.1, which is expected to bring value to its capital projects with efficient and flexible engineering. The new DCS systems offer Ethernet I/O solutions, additional high integrity controllers and several engineering tools including an Ethernet I/O field kit and Ethernet I/O wizard for field commissioning and an opportunity to engineers with signals in the control builder.
The company has offered the select I/O as an Ethernet-based single channel that uses xStream engineering to reduce project delivery schedules. Moreover, with the new DCS, the testing efforts and the hardware footprint have remarkably reduced. Additionally, the standardized cabinets–which are pretested–can be wired directly to the field devices and it would eliminate the needs for physical marshaling cabinets.
As per ABB, this version supports IES 61850 Ed 2. This means that the new DCS is a first-of-its-kind digital solution as it caters electrical integration capabilities in system 800xA, real-time information regarding power consumption down to the individual loads as well as steady electrical power supply. Additionally, the system successfully prevents blackouts and disturbances of operations.
The newly-launched DCS is developed for the small hybrid system as it is designed for integrated automation applications. It also includes support for two new safety controllers: PM857 and PM863. Both the controllers show characteristics in combination with select I/O safety single channel modules, which increased the existing capabilities. Moreover, high integrity controllers could be used for safe operations.
Prior to this, ABB had announced a shift in their strategy. The company had decided to take major actions to focus to simplify and lead in the digital industry to improve the customer value and shareholder returns. The company decided to focus on the portfolio through divestment of the power grid division and simplification of the business model through the discontinuation of the legacy matrix structure.
Ulrich Spiesshofer, the CEO of ABB, stated, “This new strategy of ABB will make it the leader in the digital industries as it will offer unique and innovative solutions in electrification, robotization, automation, and digitalization.” He added that the company has developed customer-focused and entrepreneurial businesses that are already the top players in their respective markets. With the help of ABB’s digital solutions, the company would continue to drive profitable growth. With the launch of new DCS, the company is surely sticking to its new strategy.
Increase in demand from power and energy sectors, emergence of open source DCS solution, and cost and time effectiveness have boosted the demand for global distributed control systems market. According to Allied Market Research, the Distributed Control Systems market is expected to reach $24.61 billion by 2022, registering a CAGR of 5.2% during the forecast period.
