Air conditioning has become a common phenomenon in residential and commercial spaces. As the everyday weather and climatic conditions become even more erratic owing to the phenomenon of global warming and climate change, the demand for air conditioning is expected to rise sharply. HVAC systems have become quite popular in areas where the day and night temperatures change very drastically, thereby increasing the need to control indoor temperatures artificially. However, from the environmental perspective, traditional air conditioning equipment and HVAC systems are quite detrimental.

How are green HVAC systems helping tackle the environmental problems associated with traditional air conditioning equipment?

Conventional HVAC systems can cause environmental degradation owing to several reasons; the cooling agents generally used in traditional HVAC systems emit chlorofluorocarbons and hydrofluorocarbons. These chemicals are extremely harmful to the ozone layer in the Earth’s stratosphere. Environmental studies have shown that regular CFC and HFC emissions have resulted in an ozone hole over the Antarctic and the South Pole. Along with this, traditional HVAC systems consume a lot of power, which is generally produced using conventional fossil fuels. Combustion of fossil fuels to support these HVAC systems, thus, results in massive carbon emissions which increases the rate of global warming and climate change.

Owing to these problems, there is an increasing focus on green HVAC systems which offer a solution on each of these fronts. For instance, experts in engineering have been able to develop a new coolant called R-410A (Puron) which is much more environmentally sustainable than traditional coolants. R-410A are eco-friendly as they do not harm the ozone layer in any way and have less toxicity than conventional coolants. Thus, apart from being environmentally sustainable, they are also safer for human health.

Apart from this, a new technique of air conditioning has been devised which relies on pulling the outdoor air inside and passing it over water-saturated pads. This treatment causes the water to evaporate in the air, bringing down its temperature. This cool air is then released indoors which, thus, brings down the temperature of the room. Since this technique depends on the evaporation of the water, it is called evaporative cooling. This methodology does away with the need for any refrigerant and is hence quite eco-friendly. Air conditioning equipment for evaporative cooling has gained much traction due to the shift toward environmental sustainability.

Another important shift witnessed in the air conditioning equipment industry is the use of solar energy to power HVAC systems. As said earlier, most commercial HVAC systems are powered using conventional fossil fuels. However, new air conditioning equipment has built-in systems that are compatible with solar panels. As a result, installing green HVAC systems can help in bringing down carbon emissions drastically.

How has the performance of the industry in the Europe region helped in its growth across the world?

The air conditioning equipment industry has experienced tremendous growth in the Europe region, especially in Spain and Italy. The industry is expected to rise at a CAGR of 5.5% in Spain and a CAGR of 5.3% in Italy. The growth of the sector in Europe can be attributed to the increasing governmental investments in green buildings. Various countries in this region have also mandated the use of environmentally sustainable appliances in these eco-friendly buildings which has increased the demand for green HVAC systems. Ultimately, this has helped the air conditioning equipment domain.

Apart from this, the growing disposable incomes of people in this region and the rapid pace of urbanization in different countries of Europe have played an important role in the rise of this sector. These two factors have indirectly caused a surge in demand for cooling systems which has positively impacted the sector. The launch of innovative products by leading companies in the industry has also helped in the growth of this domain in the European region and is set to strengthen the position of the industry in the years to come.

To sum it up, the growing uncertainties associated with climatic conditions have led to an increase in demand for indoor cooling systems which has expanded the scope of the air conditioning equipment industry. The growing focus on environmental degradation has led to the rising popularity of green HVAC systems which is expected to open up new opportunities for the sector in the near future.
