A Domain Name System (DNS) firewall is a kind of protection filter that inhibits the user from visiting malicious and dangerous websites. These websites are generally those which have the capabilities to infect the system with malware, thus creating a security problem. Not just identification, DNS firewalls also offer treatment solutions if a system or device has been infected with malware.
Advancements in DNS firewalls
The job of a DNS firewall is to prevent the user from visiting websites which can cause data exfiltration, ransomware and malware attacks, or phishing. For performing this function, DNS firewalls run on the principle of listing malicious websites. Once a user visits a website and the DNS firewall finds it to be malicious, the website is added to the list. Also, websites which are known to be malicious can be manually added to the DNS firewall’s list. Furthermore, this list is continuously updated, which in a way, upgrades the overall security of the system.
However, the problem with this is that malicious websites which aren’t previously visited or not known to the user pose a threat to the system despite having a DNS firewall. Technology experts have found that machine learning can be of great help in enhancing the capabilities of DNS firewalls. A study done in this field showed that machine learning algorithms can identify malicious websites on the fly. In this study, the DNS firewall powered by machine learning accurately identified 96% of the malicious websites while the accuracy of identifying harmless, benign websites was 86%. Thus, prospects of using machine learning for improving the functionality of DNS firewalls in the coming period have increased substantially.

Product launches by leading technology companies are also expected to push the growth rate of the market. In March 2021, AWS launched Amazon Route 53 Resolver DNS Firewall which helps in blocking malicious DNS queries. Such product launches have heightened the competitive nature of the industry.
