Counterfeit or adulterated food and beverages detailed by many government authorities has jumped over 50 percent in just one year. An article by Joe Witworth in “Food Quality News “shows that EU custom officials have confiscated products close to 35 million in 2014. The overall value of these items is believed to be about € 317 million. Foodstuffs alone contributed to over 1.6 million items, which was valued at € 358,000. In another incident, Italian official had seized about 31 tons of seafood that were being sold as fresh, but was actually frozen with chemical substance such as phosphate, hydrogen peroxide and citric acid to make the catch look fresh. Research analysts at Allied Market Research assessing the growth rate, share and size and trends in the anti – counterfeit packaging (food and beverage) market indicate that tragically such products have led to severe allergic reactions, skin rashes, breast cancer etc.
A honey brand that is not honey and an Aussie beer which is not Aussie has invaded the retail stores. In a recent incident it was found that “Tasmanian” cherries as well as “Barossa “wine that does not have its roots in Australia are seen competing with many Australian exporters to make its presence left in retail outlets overseas. The fast expanding retail space for high – end Australian produce has been known for being safe and clean. But, not anymore. This popularity has resulted in the wave of fake products. Another fake wine brand, selling in China is “Benfolds “. Wine experts have confirmed that the brand is using the calligraphy of the popular “Penfolds” label.
To put to rest, the losses incurred due to counterfeit food and beverages brands are constantly testing new techniques. Many clever printing technologies are helping brands deal with counterfeiting problems. Recently, Spectra Packaging shot to fame for its intelligent print technique that illuminates florescent prints. This technique offers manufacturers an added assurance with an invisible print technology, which is revealed under UV light. Commenting on their recent discovery, Kevin Peck the technical print manager at the company said “Our expert in-house decoration department continues to develop genuine ways to give products real added value.” Echoing his sentiment Kevin explained “Designed to help brands with the ever growing problem of product copying, Illuminate is yet another example of Spectra’s desire to deliver packaging that can make a difference.” Another food tracker apps called OZIRIS has now put the pricing power in the hands of the producer. In a recent incident, the packaging genius NY Label as well as Box Works agreed to add a trackless technology from Eastman Kodak to items printed applying flexographic printing techniques.
Eyeing the major developments in the sector, Allied Market Research has published a report titled “World Anti-Counterfeit Packaging (Food and Beverages) Market - Opportunities and Forecasts, 2014 – 2020.” As per the study the industry is ready to register a CAGR of 16.1 percent by 2020. Industry experts assessing the growth rate, share and size and trends outline that the sector would generate about $62.5 billion between 2014 to 2020.
