Augmented reality (AR) is an immersive technology that combines the real-world environment with computer-generated input in the form of graphics, text, audio, and other virtual enhancements. Three major components integrated in AR devices include cameras, displays, and sensors. Devices that can be used to create AR experiences are smartphones, tablets, and wearables like headsets and smart glasses.

To display AR content, the device involves three steps, including sensing and tracking, image processing and recognition, and rendering and display. To track a user's position and orientation, AR devices utilize cameras, gyroscopes, accelerometers, GPS, and lasers. They use modern algorithms of image processing and recognition to identify and track objects in real time. Once identified, the system renders and displays virtual content in the perspective required, so that the real world and the corresponding virtual content appear superimposed on each other like a hologram.

Industries Leveraging Augmented Reality

According to the findings of Allied Market Research, the augmented reality market is expected to account for $411.4 billion by 2031. The sector garnered $24.2 billion in 2021 and is estimated to register a CAGR of 33.2% from 2022 to 2031. This increase in revenue is majorly attributed to increase in penetration of 5G network and rapid adoption of AR across various sectors, including healthcare, retail, and education.

Healthcare is the largest user of AR technology that is transforming the way surgeries are performed. For instance, AR head-mounted devices have been gaining high traction as they are equipped with real-time imaging systems and assist surgeons in surgeries by offering intraoperative guidance. These features play a crucial role in complex surgical treatments such as spinal deformities and revision surgeries. Moreover, to facilitate hands-free operation and alleviate mental strain of the surgeon, the AR head-mounted device provides a heads-up display of the patient’s anatomy. This system has been reported to minimize operative time by approximately 15 minutes, which highlights its efficacy in streamlining surgical procedures.

A popular example of head-mounted devices is the Xvision system of Augmedics, Inc., a pioneer of AR technology. The devices combine the capabilities of AR with big data analytics and AI to assist surgical procedures. The system superimposes patient’s data and 3D anatomical information in real time during the surgery, thereby improving safety and accuracy. Studies have also revealed 98% accuracy rate in screw placement surgeries as compared to conventional surgeries. These evaluations align with the findings of Allied Market Research, which state that the healthcare sector is expected to grow at a notable pace in the coming years.

Furthermore, AR-powered shopping experiences such as virtual try-ons and interactive product visualizations are gaining high traction in the retail sector. As per a study by Google, 66% of consumers are shifting their preference toward retailers that offer AR-based recommendations before purchasing.

Additionally, AR technology is being rapidly adopted in the education sector, which is drastically changing traditional learning styles. Research suggests that students utilizing AR learning materials showcase a 45% higher retention rate of information than those using traditional methods. As a result, these industry findings reveal that AR is playing an essential role in transforming the future of learning, medical operations, and shopping.

Final Word

Education, retail, and healthcare sectors are swiftly embracing AR technology due to its ability to improve efficiency, accuracy, and overall experience by overlaying digital content onto the real world. The incorporation of AR into surgical procedures, shopping, and teaching has revolutionized these industries. AR head-mounted gadgets have assisted teachers conduct lessons more effectively, whereas surgeons have been able to perform more complex operations with the help of these devices. As a result, the adoption of AR is anticipated to increase significantly in the next few years.
