Automobile giants have been riding toward employing advanced technologies, reducing nitrogen oxide level, and improve capacity of diesel engines. Application of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems is one of the best ways found by them for improving capabilities of their new models. Leading market players such as Mahindra and Volkswagen have devised a way to incorporate SCR systems in the diesel engines of their models and comply with stringent regulations and emission standards. Innovative designs have been launched and tested for improving capacities of vehicles and reduce nitrogen oxide levels at the same time. The demand for SCR systems is gaining momentum with its effectiveness. According to the report published by Allied Market Research, the automotive selective catalytic reduction market is expected to reach $15.05 billion by 2026. Following are some of the activities taking place across the world.
Automobile players have realized the importance of incorporating SCR systems for their products as it helps them in achieving desired results and comply with regulatory standards. Mahindra, one of the leading market players of the world, announced that it adopted the SCR system to treat exhaust gas in its 2.2 liter diesel engine. This adoption has been carried out for meeting the new BS6 emissions regulations. The inclusion of SCR system will be made for its models including Scorpio and XUV500 along with new Thar. The company took its time to research and develop its new models as per BS6 guidelines, and been designing its exhaust gas system as per requirements.
The 2.2 liter, four cylinder mHawk diesel engine has been equipped with SCR exhaust gas treatment system, and utilizes AdBlue solution to eliminate the exhaust gases emerging out of the engine. The catalytic reduction system would ensure tailpipe emissions are clean and meet the stringent BS6 regulations. Though SCR system is more expensive than Lean NOx Trap (LNT) system, it is chosen over LNT system for its suitability and effectiveness in large capacity diesel engines.
Determining the effectiveness of SCR systems, another automotive giant Volkswagen developed the advanced SCR system known as “twin dosing” for 2.0 liter diesel engines. In this system, two SCR converters are aligned in a series and AdBlue solution is inserted into them. The second converter is located at the underbody of the vehicle. The exhaust temperature upstream of this converter is lower by nearly 100°C. This offers a bigger space for treatment of exhaust gases. The system would achieve high conversion rate even when engine is operating at +500°C. Moreover, the downstream of catalytic converter is blocked to prevent excess loss of ammonia. This ammonia can be utilized for reducing nitrogen oxide level in diesel engines.
The company used the system in its new Passat 2.0 TDI Evo. The system has been tested and complies with the Euro 6d emission standards. According the real driving emissions measurements, NOx levels have been reduced by nearly 80% with the application of twin dosing. The company plans to include the new system in all of its products with 2.0 TDI Evo engines.
