Sports nutrition is a nutrition provided to improve training, faster recovery, and health conditions. It includes food, drink, and supplements and majorly used by athletes and bodybuilders. Sports nutrition on carbohydrate and fat metabolism was first studied in Sweden in 1930. Scandinavian scientists started to study effects of prolonged exercise on muscle glycogen storage and resynthesis in the late 1960s. Gradually, technological advancements are helping scientists to measure human tissue responses to exercise and develop products to athletes and consumers to improve health conditions.
This is not restricted to athletes or bodybuilders; it has become a part of nutrition in lives of mainstream consumers. People have become more health conscious and adopting physical activities and healthier diets. It has opened up opportunities for ingredients makers and manufacturers owing to growing adoption among recreational, life style users and rising disposable income.
“Even four years ago, when you’d think sports nutrition, you’d think giving body builders lots of protein or giving endurance athletes Cliff bars,” said Michael Bush, senior vice-president of Ganeden, a probiotic ingredient manufacturer from Cleveland. “Now, if you sit outside a GNC store and see who’s buying sports supplements, it’s no longer the guys who look like they want to eat a cow for lunch. It’s active adults, it’s teens, it’s moms, it’s everybody.”
The conference took place in Las Vegas in June 2015. Experts from sports nutrition industry along with manufacturers were present. Some important insights from the conference have been mentioned below:
Protein is the most lucrative ingredient used in sports nutrition. It is added to nutritional products to deliver better performance and recovery for athletes, recover muscle loss due to aging, and weight loss & management purposes. Probiotics combined with protein provide extra benefits as probiotic helps to absorb key amino acids, such as valine, leucine, and isoleucine from protein. Study from health experts at Ganeden proved that consumption of 20 g of protein with probiotic helps in recovery after rigorous resistance training. The combination also provides immune and digestive support. Many manufacturers are using the combination of protein and probiotic in manufacturing of powders or bars.
