Free-to-air (FTA) service is often used for international broadcasting. It provides premium entertainment at no cost. It includes both radio and television broadcasts that are not encrypted. So, without the subscription of a cable company, the user can access these programs with a satellite dish.

There is no shortage of free-to-air satellite TV channels available today.  Providers like Astra, Hot Bird, Intelsat, Eutelsat, and Amazonas provide a variety of channels that can be watched at no cost. Also, there is a lower investment for free-to-air set-top boxes since they are less expensive and easier to install.

However, the accessibility of FTA services in commercial and residential areas may differ in accordance with the location. While some areas can have a wide array of channels or accessibility to both terrestrial and satellite FTA services, some regions might have access to few free channels, due to various regional restrictions on access to satellite signals.

According to a report published by Allied Market Research, the global free-to-air service market size is projected to reach $337.3 billion with a considerable CAGR from 2023 to 2032. North America is currently dominating the market with the highest market share. The Asia-Pacific region, on the other hand, is expected to witness the fastest growth rate during the forecasted period.

The increased interest of consumers in OTT solutions and streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon, and others has boosted the growth of the global free-to-air service market in more than one way. Few other factors such as surge in the integration of government initiatives in digital broadcasting and FTA services, the emergence of Over-the-top (OTT) platforms with free streaming services, the increase in number of subscribers, and the rise in need for high bandwidth for connectivity are also driving the growth of the market to a great extent.

In addition, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the demand for all types of digital services including the free-to-air service, owing to the implementation of the global lockdown which forced individuals to stay at home and limit physical contact. With this drift on board, many companies quickly adapted digital solutions to offer services to consumers.

Furthermore, companies are trying to offer better content quality to capture a wide customer pool in online streaming. They are focusing on digital broadcasting technologies, such as Video-On-Demand (VOD), High-Definition (HD), and Ultra High-Definition (UHD) Content, and satellite tuners. These technologies enable users with advantages like efficient content delivery and mesmerizing viewing experience. Such initiatives by the key companies are providing lucrative opportunities for the growth of the global FTA market.
