Key Takeaways:
A major effect of the growing industrialization and urbanization in various countries has been on the dietary habits and preferences of people across the globe. The fast-paced lifestyle that is demanded by urban setups has led to people opting for on-the-go food products that are easy to make and convenient for consumption. Furthermore, globalization has not only helped trade flourish but has also played a crucial role in people's getting accustomed to different cuisines and culinary dishes. The invention and rising popularity of instant noodles can be attributed to all these factors.
Latest developments in the instant noodles industry that are attracting new investments in 2024
Noodles are believed to have originated in Northern China during the 5000 BC era; subsequently, the Han, Song, and Yuan dynasties played a key role in popularizing this dish all over China. The dish was then prepared using diverse cooking styles and was served in different forms. However, by the late 15th century, the dried form of noodles became popular, and it was spread throughout Korea, the Philippines, Malaysia, Japan, and Thailand. Since then, noodles have remained a staple food item in almost all South-East Asian countries.
While noodles are an ancient invention, instant noodles emerged as a popular dish in modern times only. Momofuku Ando, a Taiwanese-Japanese businessman, is credited with the creation of the first mass-market instant noodles in 1958. He founded the Nissin Chikin Ramen brand which became quite popular in Japan due to the widespread poverty and hunger in the post-World War 2 period. By 1971, the product became a major attraction globally with a massive increase in demand from countries in North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and LAMEA.
Lately, instant ramen manufacturing companies are increasingly shifting to sustainable packaging to align themselves with the growing environmental awareness in these countries. Moreover, these manufacturers are collaborating with packaging companies to develop eco-friendly packaging materials with unique design styles. Some companies have even started to design personalized packaging printing to make their products more competitive in the industry.
Another important trend witnessed in the instant noodles industry is the addition of nutritional ingredients like dietary fiber, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. In the post-pandemic period, the focus has once again shifted back to eating healthy foods and maintaining a balanced lifestyle to boost immunity levels. As a result, many fast food and packaged food companies are developing products that have high nutritional content.
Food processing and packaging companies to play a leading role in the industry’s rise
To offer their customers new flavors, instant ramen manufacturers are developing products with unique seasonings and culinary options. In recent times, many companies have launched instant ramen products with diverse seasonings and flavor options. For instance, in January 2023, WickedGud, a health food brand, announced the expansion of its product portfolio by launching new maida-free and chemical-free instant noodles. The company has claimed that the noodles have the goodness of lentils, oats, millet, whole wheat, and brown rice, which makes the product a healthy substitute for traditional noodles. Furthermore, this instant ramen product is manufactured using Steaming and Convection Air Drying technology, thereby making it free of any form of oil. WickedGud launched three new flavors of the product- Masala, Schezwan, and Curry.
Also, as stated earlier, companies are using sustainable packaging solutions for their products. Nissin Food Products, a leading Japanese company credited with the first instant noodles product, announced in October 2023 that from 2024 they would be selling their Cup Noodles® in paper cups, thus replacing the polystyrene cups. The paper used for manufacturing these cups is made from 40% recycled fiber which makes it an environmentally sustainable packaging solution. Apart from its sustainable nature, this paper packaging has made Cup Noodles® microwavable for the first time, thus making them even more convenient for its customers.
To summarize, right from its invention in 1958, instant noodles have been a popular food product across the globe. Furthermore, the recent trends in the industry such as the shift toward sustainable packaging, the advent of personalized packaging, and the launch of new flavors by leading companies are projected to help in increasing its revenue in the coming period.
