Edge computing has been attracting a lot of attention in recent years as a vital driver of the next main revolution in computing platforms. It is emerging as an exciting new approach to network architecture that enables businesses to break beyond the limitations brought in by traditional cloud-based networks. One of the most important advantages of using edge computing is that it processes data at the edge of the network and increases network performance, thereby combatting latency. Also, unlike traditional cloud computing architecture which is susceptible to attacks and power outages, edge computing addresses security and compliance requirements by distributing processing, storage, and applications across several devices and data centers. Edge computing also helps manage IoT solution costs by filtering and processing the data before it is sent to the cloud, which reduces the network cost of data transmission.

The edge computing market is witnessing a tremendous growth at present, owing to several reasons such as increasing load on cloud infrastructure, a growing number of intelligent applications, and assistance for real-time applications. As per the research firm Allied Market Research, the edge computing market is expected to reach $16,556.6 million by 2025 from $1,734.8 million in 2017, thereby growing at a CAGR of 32.8% during the forecast period, 2018-2025.

Of the few developments that took place in the space recently, one is ADLINK Technologies’ plan to develop edge computing solution for Intel. Another is Quadric’s raising of $15 million in a funding round led by automotive components maker Denso in order to address the limitations of existing technologies for real-time edge computing. Yet another development in the field is the partnership between Telus and MobiledgeX to collaborate on mobile edge computing trial network in Canada.

ADLINK Develops Edge Computing Solutions for Intel

ADLINK, a designer and manufacturer of products for embedded computing and more announced its plans to form an alliance with the semiconductor company Intel to create an edge computing platform MECS-6110 as an Intel Select Solution for Universal Customer Premise Equipment (uCPE). Intel Select Solutions, a group of infrastructure solutions are based on the Intel Xeon D processors and are aimed at assisting end users to easily design choices by amalgamating hardware and software pieces while bringing high performance. Moreover, these solutions can be installed quickly for various network function virtualized (NFV) applications. The MECS-6110 offers features such as all I/O front access, dust prevention, wide operation temperature for supports of telecom feature, installation environment restrictions, and more and aims to allow customers to explore new business models and service opportunities through new applications.

Quadric Raises $15 Million for Edge Computing

California-based startup Quadric recently raised a sum of $15 million to build and enhance its platform. The company said that they have witnessed the limitations of existing technologies for real-time edge computing and wish to enhance the Quadric platform to cater to the issue and unlock new capabilities that speed up the development of autonomous systems.

Telus and MobiledgeX Team Up

Telus, a Canada-based telecommunications company and MobiledgeX, a provider of edge computing services announced their partnership on a mobile edge computing trial network in Canada. The alliance enables Telus customers to take advantage of Canada’s largest and fastest mobile network in the coming years. Telus tests MobiledgeX’s Edge-Cloud R1.0, which gathers processing capabilities in virtualized cloudlets in major locations near the edge of TELUS’ wireless and wired access networks. The locations are then leveraged via MobiledgeX by developers, device manufacturers or others who need to have data governance or deliver high performance.
