Due to excessing industrial activities around the world, a large volume of wastes is produced. This factor leads to contamination of drinking water sources. Also, as most of the countries face scarcity of potable water, waste water is being reused.  Some of the most innovative water treatment technologies are membrane filtration, UV irradiation, advanced oxidation, nanotechnology, and RO purification that has improved the efficiency and sustainability of drinking water or wastewater treatment.

Get a Detailed Insight on Water Treatment Technologies

  • Membrane filtration technology - The membrane filtration technology can be classified into low pressure and high pressure membrane filtration. The low pressure option is further classified into micro and ultrafiltration. The low pressure membrane filtration method is now used as an alternative to conventional filtration for surface water treatment, such as distillation that was widely used before to purify water. High pressure membrane filtration is used for softening the hard water. Several membrane configuration options such as spiral wrap, tubular, flat sheets and capillary are used in this technology.
  • UV irradiation technology - UV irradiation or purification technology is also known as the e-boiling method. This technology focusses on the utilization of the UV rays to kill bacteria and other harmful and poisonous substances present in the water. The UV water purifier contains a tiny mercury lamp that radiates UV light to disrupt the DNA structure of the microorganisms and thus stop them from reproducing.
  • Advanced oxidation technology - This technology makes use of oxidizing agents like ozone, ozone with hydrogen peroxide addition, and UV with hydrogen peroxide addition to oxidize any impurity present in the water. It does not come with any issues associated with toxic chemicals or any highly harmful by-products, thereby is considered as one of the best options for use with drinking water treatment.
  • Nanotechnology - It is a ground-breaking technology that holds an enormous potential in the field of wastewater treatment. Nanomaterials are efficient, low cost, and environment friendly alternatives to existing treatment materials because it does not use the polymer-based water treatment membrane. This technology uses titanium dioxide to eliminate bacteria and other toxins present in water.
  • Reverse Osmosis (RO) purification technology – This technology uses semi-permeable membrane to remove dissolved salts, impurities, and germs from water. The semi-permeable membrane contains tiny pores that only allow water molecules to pass through it.

Current market scenario of water treatment technology industry: -

According to a report published by Allied Market Research, the global water treatment technology market size is anticipated to reach $265.9 billion with a considerable CAGR from 2021 to 2030. The Asia-Pacific region is expected to grow at the fastest rate, owing to a significant increase in scarcity of freshwater sources in countries like China, India, Australia, Japan, and Korea. These emerging economies emphasize on development of water treatment plants to reduce the scarcity of fresh water, which in turn, is providing lucrative opportunities to the key market players to expand their business in the region.

Furthermore, rise in R&D activities and technological advancements for the development of energy efficient water technology systems are contributing to the growth of the market to a great extent. With the introduction of automation, remote control, and communication technologies in water treatment system, the market is expected to boost even more in the near future
