5G mmWave offers the highest levels of speed and capacity, enabling cutting-edge technologies like autonomous vehicles. MmWave is ideal for environments that require higher speeds and ultra-low latency over shorter distances. Technologies such as self-driving vehicles need ultra-low latency connectivity to receive inputs and process information in near real-time.

The high demand for faster internet and greater bandwidth, fueled by data-heavy applications such as HD streaming, AR, VR, and IoT, is a primary driving force. This demand is supported by the need for digital transformation in the healthcare, automotive, and manufacturing sectors, which rely on advanced wireless technologies for machine communications and real-time data.  Investments in 5G infrastructure and supportive regulatory policies, particularly in developed regions, also significantly influence industry growth.

Contributing to smart cities

5G mmWave technology is essential for the development of smart cities, offering the high-speed, low-latency connectivity needed for a wide range of smart city applications. 5G mmWave supports a large number of connected devices at the same time, which is essential for smart city applications involving numerous interconnected sensors and IoT devices. The extensive open spectrum provided by 5G mmWave ensures reliable connectivity for smart city infrastructure, including traffic lights, surveillance cameras, parking meters, and environmental sensors.

The low latency of 5G mmWave, around 1 ms, is for smart city applications such as autonomous vehicles, drone communications, and emergency response systems. Its ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC) abilities enable real-time control and coordination of these essential services. Moreover, 5G mmWave delivers fiber-like internet speeds wirelessly, offering a cost-effective alternative to wired infrastructure for smart city implementations. This high-speed connectivity enhances the efficiency of smart city applications such as real-time traffic management, smart parking, and waste management, resulting in cost savings and an improved quality of life for citizens.

An overview of the evolving Asia-Pacific 5G mmWave technology industry

The rapid industrialization and urbanization across the region are fueling the demand for advanced telecommunications infrastructure. With the evolution and digitalization of industries, the importance of high-capacity networks provided by mmWave technology is growing. This is particularly evident in sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, and smart cities, where maintaining efficient operations relies heavily on robust connectivity.

Government bodies  in the Asia-Pacific region are actively supporting the adoption of 5G technologies by implementing favorable policies and making strategic investments. Initiatives designed to improve digital infrastructure and attract private sector investment are essential for advancing the rise of mmWave technology. This regulatory backing helps address entry barriers and speeds up industry expansion.

Also, the presence of prominent telecommunications companies and technology providers strengthens the position of the region in the 5G mmWave technology industry. This concentration of expertise and resources establishes a strong ecosystem that supports the research, development, and deployment of mmWave solutions. Among the emerging economies of Asia-Pacific, China is projected to showcase a notable CAGR of 18.3% throughout the forecast timeframe.

A1 Austria conducted the first 5G mmwave technology test site in Vienna

In May 2024, Austrian operator A1 introduced mmWave technology at a 5G mobile site in Vienna in collaboration with Nokia. This test at a mobile radio station comes after A1 secured spectrum in the 26 GHz band during a recent frequency auction. The mmWave radios installed at the site offer A1 substantial benefits, including ultra-fast 5G speeds, exceptionally low latency, and enhanced capacity.

Airtel and Ericsson established 5G mmWave capabilities in India

Bharti Airtel and Ericsson jointly showcased the abilities of 5G mmWave technology on Airtel’s network in India, achieving peak speeds of 4.7 Gbps. This test emphasizes the potential of mmWave technology to boost network capacity, particularly in densely populated urban areas. The demonstration also highlighted the viability of using Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) to extend connectivity to regions without fiber connections.

Ericsson’s specialized hardware and software, powered by Ericsson Silicon, enables optimal use of the high-band spectrum, providing Airtel with a robust solution for delivering high-capacity connectivity via an FWA solution in urban areas.

In conclusion, 5G mmWave technology is revolutionizing connectivity across various sectors, enabling ultra-low latency and high-speed communications for smart cities and advanced applications. Moreover, strategic investments, supportive policies, and technological advancements are estimated to fuel the rapid adoption and expansion of this technology.
