  • Role of LFP batteries in the growth of the industry
  • Product launches in the sector

A chemical compound composed of lithium, carbon, and oxygen, lithium carbonate (Li₂CO₃) occurs naturally as a white, crystalline powder. Over the years, the use of this compound in various end-use industries has increased significantly. In the pharmaceutical sector, for instance, lithium carbonate has been used as a trace mineral in the manufacturing of various drugs and medications. Along with this, the gradual shift toward electric mobility has been one of the biggest reasons behind the surge in demand for this compound. Sourced from natural minerals such as spodumene, lithium carbonate is one of the key constituents of batteries and energy storage systems that are used in electric vehicles and consumer electronic devices such as smartphones, laptops, tablets, wearables, and other smart gadgets.

Increasing adoption of LFP batteries reshaping industry dynamics

Over the years, two major types of rechargeable energy storage systems, viz., lithium hydroxide (LiOH) and lithium carbonate (Li₂CO₃) batteries, have emerged which are widely used to power different gadgets and automobiles. While lithium hydroxide batteries are preferred for EV applications, lithium carbonate cells are deployed in consumer electronic devices and small electric vehicles. Popularly called LFP batteries, these systems have unique chemical compositions and effectively address some of the challenges associated with conventional Li-ion batteries.

In recent times, a major issue witnessed in the electric vehicle industry is that of batteries exploding or catching fire due to overheating. These incidences have led to a huge loss of trust among consumers with respect to EVs, leading to a drop in sales across the globe. As a result, automobile companies have started shifting to LFP batteries which have much better stability, thus reducing the risk of thermal runaway. This makes lithium carbonate cells a safer and more reliable option, thereby increasing their utility in tropical regions where climatic conditions are generally hot and dry. Along with this, LFP batteries are known to have much longer life cycles than conventional Li-ion systems, thus allowing them to withstand a large number of charge and discharge cycles.

Launch of innovative LFP batteries creating new investment opportunities in the sector

The lithium carbonate industry accounted for $26.7 billion in 2023 and is predicted to gather a revenue of $102.8 billion by 2033, citing a CAGR of 14.5% during 2024-2033. The rising demand for lithium carbonate from battery manufacturing companies to develop LFP batteries has played an important role in the growth of the market. Recently, several leading players have invested heavily in this sector to expand their footprint in the landscape.

For instance, in December 2024, Ascend Elements, a sustainable battery materials company, announced the launch of a new lithium recovery line at its Covington battery recycling facility to produce 99% pure lithium carbonate from used Li-ion batteries. As per Eric Gratz, co-founder and CTO of Ascend Elements, the demand for this compound is expected to rise significantly in the coming period owing to its use in advanced battery production processes. This new initiative is expected to help the company reduce its dependence on imports and minimize its input costs in the long run.

Similarly, in January 2025, E3 Lithium, a Canadian lithium brine developer, released a press statement announcing the successful completion of its lithium carbonate production project. The company, through this program, was able to produce 99.71% pure, battery-quality lithium carbonate from brines in Leduc, Canada. Chris Doornbos, President and CEO of E3 Lithium, highlighted that this achievement will help the company enhance its lithium production capabilities, thereby aiding them meet industry demand seamlessly.

In summary, the rising adoption of LFP batteries is expected to contribute to the expansion of the lithium carbonate industry in the coming period. Additionally, the significant investments made by multinational companies in R&D activities are anticipated to create favorable conditions for the growth of the sector in recent times.
