  • Why is the domain of display technologies in the news ?
  • Flexible panel displays
  • LCDs
  • OLEDs
  • Quantum-dot Displays

Recently, in October 2023, Philips announced the launch of sustainability-focused 4K D-Line 4650 display series. With display angles up to 178-degrees, these displays have long product lifetime which reduces the e-waste, thereby promoting ecological sustainability. Such product launches have once again brought the field of display technologies into the limelight. Since the last decade or so, the display sector has witnessed major advancements which has transformed the entire sector. Furthermore, the rise in demand for interactive displays and touch-based devices is projected to expand the domain of demand technologies.

What are the trends in display technologies that businesses should be aware of?

One of the biggest advancements in the field of display technologies is the development of flexible panel displays. Flexible panel displays are increasingly being used in automotive head-up displays, wearables, smartphones, etc. One major advantage which has led to a surge in demand for these displays is that they are less brittle in nature which makes them perfect for foldable devices.

Increasing popularity of Liquid Crystalline Display (LCD) is another important trend in the field of display technologies. LCDs due to their inherent advantages including better image quality, wide viewing angle, and energy efficiency have already become the most preferred choice for display systems. The LCD segment is anticipated to garner an absolute revenue of $66.01 billion by 2032. Moreover, several variants of LCDs such as color-enhanced LCDs have been developed owing to major investment in R&D activities.

The display sector is also witnessing the development and proliferation of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays. Since OLEDs are made of sheets that emit flat light, they are much thinner compared to LCDs. Additionally, they provide a better image quality owing to their improved contrast and brightness parameters. These features of OLEDs have led to a gradual increase in their adoption in manufacturing of wearables and other consumer electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Recently, a display systems developer, Mattrix Technologies, announced the launched of recycled OLEDs. Such innovative product launches are anticipated to help the OLED segment to amass an absolute revenue of $22.81 billion by 2032.

Quantum-dot LED is yet another emerging technology in the field of display systems. Q-dots are similar to OLED; the main difference is that while OLEDs use light emitting diodes, Q-dots use semiconductor nanocrystals to produce monochromatic light. The use of nanocrystals makes this technology even more energy-efficient, while at the same time producing clear and accurate images. Hence, Q-dot displays are mostly used for immersive gaming and video applications. Though the technology is rather nascent, the Quantum-Dot segment is anticipated to gather an absolute revenue of $4.37 billion by 2032.

Thus, the field of display technologies is quite vast and is continuously undergoing evolution. The innovative spirit of the companies and businesses operating in this sector has further led to widening the scope of this industry. With the advent of technologies such as augmented and virtual reality, the demand for different types of displays is bound to increase in the coming period.
