Novel Biometric Technologies Developed to Reduce Counterfeiting and Offer High Security

Technological advancements have engulfed every aspect of human life in the last decade. Technology has shown significant progress owing to multiple research and development activities in recent years. The biometric sensor technology plays a vital role in establishing a solid security system across various sectors such as commercialized buildings, banks, medical and research labs and smart weapons. Fingerprint and hand scans have gained popularity as the technology is easy to configure and understand. The consumer interaction with biometric technology has increased over the years and this has resulted in high demand for the same. High-end smartphones are integrated with fingerprint scanners or iris detectors for authentication purposes. Moreover, several other security applications such as banking and other financial service apps assist users to log in to their accounts using the biometric technology. A market study published by Allied Market Research discusses the important parameters of the biometric sensor market such as the market share, size, and growth. The adoption rate of the biometric sensor technology is increasing owing to innovative solutions and features that are introduced to the market.

Biometric app for mobile security

It is safe to say that majority of the world population uses smartphones daily. Important and sensitive data is stored in these devices which is vulnerable. It is risky to not protect the data stored in the smartphones owing to security concerns. Biometric sensor technology offers a significant amount of data protection and security. Thus, the adoption of biometrics in smartphones has increased in the last decade. Researchers are striving hard to find solutions to reduce security risks.

The research scientists at the Institute of Cyber Intelligence Systems at the National Research Nuclear University (Russia) are currently developing a mobile application, InCallAuth that will enable smartphone devices to recognize the owner based on the characteristic hand movement while answering a call. Data from the device’s accelerator, light sensor and a gyroscope will be used by the application to transmit data.  The other parameters that will be considered include, initial device position, hand movement speed while holding the smartphone, and the change in the phone position in space. The app will ask for a password if the application does not recognize the owner without which it will not be possible to answer calls. This authentication method is chosen due to its simplicity. The app will work on the OC Android devices and the researchers are hoping to launch the app by February 2018. Based on the study conducted by the research groups at the Copenhagen University, the hand movement while answering an incoming call is unique for different people. Applications that are like InCallAuth have been downloaded around 20 million times. This indicates that there is a huge interest for call protection and the demand needs to be addressed. According to a senior researcher, Stanislav Protasov, authentication by hand gestures and movement is a future technology with no scope of counterfeiting the specified parameters. The authentication methods that make use of hand movements have a precision of 95 percent. The chances of a device getting blocked is one in twenty times. The main advantage of this technology is that it is impossible to counterfeit it.

Lip motion password technology

Biometric sensor technology that such as fingerprint scanning to unlock devices and iris technology to authenticate applications is widely used worldwide. However, if the scan is stolen or hacked, the owner must seek alternative identity security system. This shortcoming of fingerprint scanning technology has urged researchers to develop and discover other biometric solutions that will offer solid security.

A new technology was invented by a scholar at the Hong Kong Baptist University which makes use of an individual’s lip motions to create a password. The technology works by matching the user’s lip movement with the password content. The lip movement of any individual cannot be replicated making this a cutting-edge technology. The lip password can be integrated with biometrics to improve the existing security levels. The lip password can be combined with face recognition.

The biometric sensor market has witnessed a steady growth in the last decade. Research and development activities have created several opportunities in the market along with advancement in technology. The growing concerns regarding security and data protection have urged manufacturers to develop advanced biometric sensor technologies that cater to different industrial sectors. The adoption rate of the biometric sensor technology is high in the developed markets such as the U.S., Canada, Germany and the UK. However, the adoption rates in the Asia-Pacific region have shown a significant growth owing to high demand for smartphone security and authentication in banks and other financial services. Leading manufacturers are collaborating with each other to develop innovative biometric technologies.
