Culinary tourism is defined as the pursuit to enjoy unique and memorable food and drink experiences. The goal of culinary tourism is to educate and inspire travelers to learn about food history and techniques to make local cuisine. The Department of Tourism (DOT) has published several food safety guidelines for all the dine-in places during the COVID-19 pandemic. The chief of the DOT explained the changes in the dining-out experiences such as new social distancing regulations that include the health and safety of the travelers. Cesar Cruz, the president of Philippine Travel Operators Associating (PHILTOA), believes that the tourism sector must not stop and prevail against all odds while adopting necessary protocols in the post-Covid-19 pandemic to continue the work going and keep tourists safe from the corona-virus.

Technology to help the food tourism business

Traveling Spoon, a California-based food tourism company, has offered different types of food experiences to culinary tourists in several cities. The best way for culinary travelers to learn about different cuisines and recipes is to share meals with locals. To survive the hard-times of COVID-19, Traveling Spoon had to come up with a new business strategy and have started an innovative series of online cooking.

This technique allows individuals to learn from the safety of their kitchens. Due to the pandemic, the company had faced a big loss, losing almost 98% of the revenue. Thus, the company had to come up with something innovative for the future growth of the business. With this new business strategy, the company received a great response from its customers.

Indonesian culinary tourism to get enhanced

Minister of Indonesia’s tourism and creative economy, Wishnutama has developed strategies to boost the international tourist visit. Wishnutama’s first action was to improve the quality of regional culinary services. He urges that the Indonesian’s culinary affluence could attract more tourists in the future. Therefore, Wishnutama went for a creative approach where he asked the residents to improve the quality of their dishes to attract the tourists.

The curiosity of the customers to know about the food tradition of different places and their cultures and values help the culinary tourism to grow. Currently, the adoption of safety protocols is necessary to ensure the protection of tourists from the novel coronavirus. Moreover, due to advancements in technology, people can learn cooking and the traditions of various places while sitting at their homes, which is expected to boost the culinary tourism post-pandemic.
