Vegan is a type of diet that excludes eggs, meats, dairy products, and all other animal-derived products such as honey, gelatin, and collagen. Due to an array of benefits of consuming vegan food such as low cholesterol level, low anxiety & stress, and so on, millennials across the world have started to switch to vegan diets. This in turn, is contributing in the expansion of the vegan industry tremendously. In order to meet this new vegan demand, food industry experts throughout the supply chain have shifted their focus to vegan products. Food manufacturers have modified as well as altered the production process and ingredients so that they can better target the vegan consumers.

In the recent few years, pasta being one of the most preferred vegan fast food items is gaining attraction in its vegan segment. Several popular food manufactures, especially in developed regions like North America and Europe, have started making various types of vegan pasta. Though vegan pasta existed in Italy for centuries, it has recently got its hands on several other regions.

Fresh pasta is usually made with eggs, making it non-vegan friendly. Dried pasta is usually vegan, as it only contains flour and semolina. Though vegan pasta can be made in any shapes when made with white dough, the traditional vegan shapes are orecchiette, strascinati, trofie, and malloreddus. The names are inspired either by the shape or manufacturing technique. For instance, orecchiette means little ears, inspired by its shape. On the other hand, strascinati means drag which is inspired by the process of dragging of dough involved in the making of pasta. Similarly, trofie is derived from a word strufuggia which means to rub.

According to a report published by Allied Market Research, the vegan pasta market size is expected to grow with a considerable CAGR from 2021 to 2030. Certain factors such as increase in trend of veganism, change in lifestyle, preference of a healthy diet, availability of a wide range of vegan pasta, vegan pasta being high quality and healthier product, and less preparation time are driving the growth of the market to a great extent.

In addition, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has made people more conscious regarding their health and diet, which has boosted the demand for vegan pasta even more. People prefer to stay away from meat products due to diseases in poultry, pig, and other animals. With this drift on board, the global vegan pasta market is expected to reach heights in the upcoming years.
