Highlights:
A liquid fertilizer derived from marine plants, seaweed extracts are organic resources that contribute to sustainable agriculture and soil health. The rise in popularity of organic products among consumers has resulted in a substantial increase in the demand for seaweed extracts. The adoption of sustainable and chemical-free practices in organic farming has positioned seaweed extracts as a viable option for various agricultural products such as fertilizers and foliar sprays, leading to a notable expansion in the industry share of seaweed extracts.
This growth aligns with the increase in preference, among health-conscious consumers, for organic and clean-label choices in food and beverages, consequently fueling the demand for seaweed extracts. The global seaweed extract industry is anticipated to manifest a notable CAGR of 6.1% by 2032.
Seaweed extracts are obtained from marine plants such as ascophyllum, kelp (ecklonia), and other seaweed species through a sophisticated production process. The harvested seaweed undergoes a cleansing procedure to remove saltwater content. Subsequently, it is subjected to either composting or water-based fermentation, allowing the organic materials to break into a slurry.
Seaweed extracts in aquaculture:
Seaweed extracts have witnessed increased demand in aquaculture, primarily attributed to their antimicrobial properties and potential therapeutic advantages. According to researchers, several seaweed extracts, especially those derived from red seaweed, such as Asparagopsis spp., and brown seaweeds, such as Sargassum spp., showcase substantial antimicrobial effects against infectious agents in fish and shrimp.
How do seaweed extracts boost production in agriculture?
In recent years, the use of seaweed extracts has become popular, particularly in organic and sustainable agriculture, focusing specifically on rainfed crops. These extracts offer a viable alternative to excessive fertilizer applications and contribute to enhanced mineral absorption. In addition, seaweed-derived extracts distinguish themselves from chemical fertilizers as they are biodegradable, non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and non-hazardous to humans, animals, or birds.
These extracts are known for their ability to stimulate plant growth and increase yield. Furthermore, seaweed extracts contribute to the development of stress tolerance in plants, enhance nutrient uptake from the soil, and boost antioxidant properties. These agricultural applications foster the potential of seaweed extracts.
Which futuristic trends are expected to boost the seaweed extract industry?
A noteworthy trend is the rise in use of seaweed extracts as a fundamental component of sophisticated cuisine and beverages. The valuable nutritional content and versatility of seaweed extracts have gained recognition, with an added emphasis on incorporation of natural ingredients.
Businesses have adapted their operations, particularly in algae-based items such as snacks, spices, and edibles, to meet the surge in consumer demand for more sustainable and healthful choices. Seaweed is known as a superfood due to its elevated levels of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
The inclusion of seaweed extracts in functional foods and health supplements has gained traction as individuals increasingly prioritize healthy food choices. These extracts are acknowledged for their potential health benefits, such as improved intestinal health, weight management, and immune system support, in addition to their nutritional value.
In the industry of seaweed extracts, sustainability has gained significance. Seaweed cultivation is often viewed as more ecologically friendly compared to traditional crops, as it requires less land, and water, and is less prone to diseases. To meet the surge in demand for sustainable products among customers, the seaweed extracts industry is actively promoting environmentally friendly and sustainably sourced options. This includes measures to ensure the sustainability of seaweed harvesting methods and the adoption of environmentally friendly packaging accessories.
The beauty and personal care industry has embraced the incorporation of seaweed extracts into skincare and haircare products. Seaweed extracts have emerged as a vital ingredient in cosmetic formulations due to their moisturizing, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties.
The usage of seaweed extract-based soaps, masks, and serums has gained popularity as they align with inclination of customer preference for natural and effective solutions for their hair and skincare needs. The demand for seaweed extracts has experienced a notable surge owing to the rise of vegan and sustainable cultures.
How do top players dominate the sector of seaweed extract industry?
The global seaweed extract industry is dynamic, and the key players have adopted strategies such as mergers, partnerships, collaborations, and acquisitions to sustain the competition. Moreover, they invest in R&D to discover innovative products with advanced features. For instance, on December 26, 2022, KRIBHCO launched SIVARIKA - a sustainable and innovative Seaweed Bio-stimulant. The granules in this product contain seaweed extract derived from red and brown algae.
CSIR-CSMCRI provides the technology for SIVARIKA Seaweed. This seaweed-based product serves as a metabolic bio enhancer, containing proteins, carbohydrates, inorganic salts, and various inherent nutrients. It includes vitamins, and plant growth hormones such as auxin, cytokinin, gibberellins, betaines, and mannitol.
On the other hand, the CMFRI (Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to produce Cadalmin LivCure extract on December 20, 2022. This nutraceutical product, derived from seaweed, is patented and targets NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease). This product is a mixture of 100% natural ingredients derived from specific seaweeds. It helps to improve liver health and it is the ninth nutraceutical developed by the CMFRI.
To sum up, the seaweed extract industry has gained popularity due to the surge in demand for sustainable agriculture, increase in awareness regarding the health benefits of seaweed, and the rise in adoption of seaweed extracts in the food and beverage domain. However, the rise in the application of seaweed extracts in pet foods and technological advancements in manufacturing processes are expected to open new avenues for the industry in the future.
