Highlights:
Pest control refers to the management and regulation of species defined as pests, which include insects, rodents, and other organisms that adversely affect human activities or the environment. This management includes various aspects of handling pests, starting from tolerance to eradication, depending on the severity of the pest problem. Effective pest control often employs an integrated pest management strategy that combines various tactics to minimize pest populations and their impact.
What modern technologies have revolutionized pest control management?
In the last few years, the pest control market has undergone significant advancements that have enhanced the efficiency, precision, and sustainability of pest management practices. For instance, CRISPR technology has revolutionized pest control by enabling targeted gene editing to regulate pest populations. This innovative approach focuses on altering the fertility of specific insects, allowing for self-limiting populations without the need for their widespread killing. Researchers create genetically modified organisms that reduce pest reproduction by using CRISPR, thus controlling infestations safely for humans and pets. This method addresses pest issues effectively and aligns with sustainable agricultural practices, minimizing environmental impact while enhancing crop protection.
On the other hand, drones are transforming pest management by providing precise pesticide application and enhancing inspection efficiency. They are equipped with advanced imaging technology that swiftly identifies pest entry points and monitors crop health minutely. Modern drones also have the capability to deter nuisance birds by simulating the presence of natural predators. Additionally, drones with infrared sensors detect invasive pests in hard-to-reach areas, allowing for targeted interventions. This innovative use of drone technology has improved the effectiveness of pest control and promotes sustainable agricultural practices.
Furthermore, AI has brought new aspects to pest control activities by automating pest detection, monitoring, and treatment planning. This technology analyzes historical data, environmental conditions, and pest behavior by using predictive modeling to forecast potential outbreaks. This capability of AI allows for timely and targeted inspection of crops, significantly improving the effectiveness of pest management strategies. In addition, it enhances decision-making for farmers and pest control professionals by processing vast amounts of data quickly. This further leads to more efficient resource use and reduced reliance on chemical treatments, promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
Bayer partnered with AlphaBio Control to launch innovative biological insecticides for arable crops
Bayer, a provider of healthcare and agriculture products and services signed an agreement with AlphaBio Control, a leader in crop protection tools, in April 2024, to secure a license for a new biological insecticide. This product is designed to be first available for arable crops such as oilseed rape and cereals. The insecticide was discovered by AlphaBio with whom Bayer has distributed FLiPPER, an award-winning bioinsecticide-acaricide.
At a conference, Benoit Hartmann, Head of Biologics at Bayer’s Crop Science Division, emphasized that modern farmers require innovative solutions to address the challenges of feeding a growing population, adapting to global climate change, and meeting higher safety and sustainability standards. He added that for regenerative agriculture, biocontrols are a perfect fit, bringing a new biological crop protection option to farmers that can be further used for arable crops.
Moreover, this newly launched bioinsecticide has the potential to fight against Coleoptera insects like the cabbage stem flea beetle (CSFB), a pest insect that damages oilseed rape crops throughout the growing season and even causes seedling death. According to Marta Ruiz, General Manager for AlphaBio Control, issuing the license to its latest bioinsecticide is expected to improve the choices available to arable farmers, reducing the environmental impact of food production significantly. Also, this new product has also offered a cost-effective solution to farmers to produce crops on a large scale compared to other biological alternatives.
Significant moves by top players to enhance pest control services in 2024
In November 2024, Thompson Street Capital Partners, a St. Louis-based private equity firm joined hands with Green Mango Pest Control, LLC, a leading provider of pest control services to residential and commercial customers. This acquisition has enabled Green Mango to expand its business across the globe by providing high-quality services to customers. According to Jay Keating, the CEO of Green Mango, this agreement has played a key role in the expansion of the company, creating new opportunities for its businesses.
In October 2024, Ecolab Pest Elimination, a leading provider of pest control solutions announced its acquisition of the assets of the PSSI Pest business, a leading food safety solutions company. Through this agreement, Ecolab aimed to extend its product offerings in the global market. The company plans to offer a team of technical experts, food sanitors, equipment engineers, and safety specialists to work to protect USDA, CFIA, and FDA processing facilities to keep them compliant, clean, safe, and audit-ready.
The essence
Pest control is a demanding field that requires a combination of strategies for effective management. The rise of modern technologies such as AI and drones has increased the efficacy of this method while addressing several environmental concerns associated with traditional methods. Moreover, the rising cases of serious issues with bed bugs and mosquitoes among homeowners are expected to drive more innovations in the sector.
