A World Wildlife Fund report has stated that around 66% of the global population will face water shortages by 2025. Furthermore, this problem of water scarcity is bound to be exacerbated due to climate change and global warming. In such a scenario, recycling and reusing of water becomes extremely crucial for the very survival of this planet.
Advanced water recycling and reuse technologies
In the past few years, due to awareness programs and international pressure from civil society, there has been an increasing focus on water recycling measures. Even private companies have jumped in to contribute to developing technologies that help in water reuse. In these efforts, technologies like membrane bioreactors, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, etc., have been developed.
Membrane bioreactors use biological agents to treat wastewater and offer potable water. It involves three stages of wastewater treatment, each of which makes use of biological agents to breakdown the decomposable wastes present in the water. Tests have revealed that the efficiency of this process is pretty high. Ultrafiltration is another water recycle and reuse technology that can fully treat wastewater. By using nano filters, this method ensures removal of viruses and organic macro-molecules also, in addition to waste materials. Reverse Osmosis is one of the most advanced water treatment technologies available today. In this process, pre-treated water is subjected to desalination process using semi-permeable membranes. In the past few years, disinfection technologies using electromagnetic spectrum and UV light are also being employed for water recycling processes.
Important factors affecting the growth of the market
The extent of the water scarcity problem can be understood from the fact that a dedicated industry of water recycle and reuse processes has been established. Recently Allied Market Research, a renowned market research company published a report on the status of the water recycle and reuse market. According to the report, the market is set to grow at a CAGR of 11.2% in the 2023-2032 period. A growth in global population has naturally led to an increase in demand for potable water which has fueled the demand for water recycling technologies. Additionally, increasing environmental awareness regarding the problems faced by marginalized sections of the global population has further helped the market to grow.
In the recent past, there have been huge investments by the private sector and research institutes in R&D of water recycling technologies. Leading companies of the industry such as Aquatech International LLC, DeLoach Industries Inc., Industrial Water Equipment Ltd., are continuously engaged in testing technologies which will address the problem of water scarcity. For example, a study conducted National Alliance for Water Innovation (NAWI) has shown that reverse osmosis technology can be used to turn salty ocean waters into clean drinking water. Such studies have opened up new growth opportunities for the market.
The water recycle and reuse market, to summarize, has grown due to the rising global demand for potable water. Increasing environmental awareness and huge investments in research and development of innovative technologies will further expand the scope of the market in the years to come.
