Today, embedded systems have emerged as an integral part of man’s daily life. So be it a smart phone, a router or an advanced electronics in a car – these systems have changed lives like never before say research analysts at Allied Market Research studying the size and share, growth as well as the demands in the embedded computing market.
The industry includes different segments such as computer software, mechanical or technical parts and hardware, which have been developed to carry out a dedicated function. The hardware in an embedded system is expected to meet certain real-time computing demands. Some of the key building blocks of such systems are microcontrollers, integrated chips and others.
The 8-bit controllers have been around for quite some time. What many would be surprised to know is, these controllers are still powering an array of embedded applications. Some of the finest examples include household appliances, automotive body of an electronic equipment smart cards and others. To fulfil the increasing demand for greater performance manufacturers have upgraded them, for e.g. 16 bit – 32 bit. These microcontrollers are generally used in media players, routers as well as mobile phones. Furthermore, technology advancements that has enabled the performance of these processors is driving the market in regions such as North America and Europe.
Moreover, the enhanced processing capabilities of these processors also serve many new applications, particularly in the field of multimedia, compression as well as rendering. Attributes such as quicker response and highly efficient algorithms ensured by the upgraded processor are found valuable in areas like imaging and recognition, which needs high bandwidth. There is a growing need for multi-core processors that not only enhance the throughput of an application but also lower power consumption. In addition, these processors reduce operation cost and increase accuracy and reliability. Today, many semiconductor manufacturing companies prefer incorporating a single chip with multiple cores. The gaming consoles also use multi-core processors. Industry experts are confident that these processors will create growth opportunities for the embedded computing market worldwide.
Developers of smart devices, wearables and internet of thing (IoT) products have been demanding affordable chips for long. There was a sigh of relief, when Intel decided to sell the “Quark Microcontroller Developer Kit D2000” at just $15. The product is categorized under the Development Boards & Kits - x86 and has different components that are mashed onto a small circuit board. It is mainly used to develop industrial tools, intelligent devices, home automation and IoT products.
Brands like Intel are now targeting enterprises that specialize in IoT products and the community consisting of DIY hardware manufacturers with advanced board. These circuit boards offer a cost effective way to develop intelligent devices as well as prototype electronics. Intel is definitely setting a new trend in the microcontroller space after SparkFun and Atmel popular for developing affordable boards.
It is not new for researchers to apply tricky and highly intensive algorithms to further their study of CPU architecture. Many start-ups have even managed to pop out of their stealth mode to demonstrate their efforts to the entire world. In a recent incidence a company named Knupath has stunned many in the embedded computing market with their new CPU architecture. This de-cloaking actually came after 10 years and introduced to the world, one its kind digital signal processor especially developed for analytics, signal processing as well as deep learning.
Many wonder why the forerunners remained beneath the radar for 10 years. To this Dan Goldin, a former administrator at NASA adds that he was working on an advanced architecture. Recent news reveals that the company is confident about its potential – and about $100 million towards patient investment. Knupath is betting sparse matrix on reprogrammable and low –power equipment. To make it simple, in sparse matrix based –computing most of the entries are Zero Their application in PageRank by Google is paramount.
The influence of embedded computing market can be strongly felt in the automotive sector. Companies collaborating to secure the foundation of autonomous vehicles are seen depending on hardware. Rambus Inc. (NASDAQ: RMBS), a pioneer in the digital security space and dedicated to securing the foundation of connected cars has joined hands with Mobimento, a specialist in Over –the –Air software lifecycle. Both the companies will be concentrating on delivering a secure as well as personalized Over –the –Air updates that are highly important for both the safety and performance in the connected car space. Rambus Inc. has developed an integrated security solution, called the CryptoManager.
Echoing his sentiments, Dr. Martin Scott, the general manager in Cryptography Research Division, Rambus Inc. said “Many current OTA solutions deliver functional updates and security patches for vehicles using the same software encryption key for multiple vehicles, increasing the vulnerability of the update.” Scott further explained “The Rambus CryptoManager solution provides an integrated security platform with flexible implementation from the hardware root-of-trust to the secure firmware which, when combined with Movimento’s OTA technology, enables the next level of integrated chip-to-cloud-to-car security.”
The CryptoManager platform plays an important role in cost reduction. It does so by enabling different security features that are already embedded in the chipsets. Moreover, the platform does not require any additional hardware. By simply using an embedded hardware, the platform can easily reduce the attack surface of a car and offer an end-point security.
To conclude, the hardware products in embedded computing market is expected to experience a major shift in 2016 and the trend would continue.
