Highlights:
SerDes (Serializer/Deserializer) technology has become essential for modern digital systems, enabling high-speed, reliable data transfer across a wide range of industries. With growing demand for data requirements and rise in the number of interconnected devices across various industries, SerDes solutions are evolving to meet the demands for next-generation applications.
A brief on SerDes technology
SerDes is a technology comprising two integrated circuits designed for high-speed data communication. The serializer converts parallel data into a serial data stream, while the deserializer performs the reverse, translating the serial stream back into parallel data. This conversion significantly reduces the number of input/output pins and physical connections required, making SerDes ideal for high-bandwidth applications such as PCIe, Ethernet, and USB, where efficient and fast data transmission is essential.
Role of SerDes in driving high-speed data across key industries
The SerDes industry has observed significant growth due to the expanding applications of SerDes technology across multiple sectors. According to Allied Market Research, the industry is predicted to rise at a CAGR of 13.3% from 2024 to 2032. In the last few years, the automotive industry has undergone technological revolution, resulting in the development of advanced driver-assistance systems, autonomous driving, and in-car infotainment systems. It has increased the unprecedented demand for high-bandwidth data transmission in the sector. High-performance SerDes solutions are essential for handling the massive data flows generated by high-resolution cameras, LiDAR, radar, and sensor networks within vehicles. These systems require real-time data exchange to ensure safety and enable features such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warnings, and automated parking.
Similarly, telecommunications is another sector where the role of this advanced technology is indispensable. The advent of 5G networks and the ongoing expansion of high-speed internet services have created a need for SerDes solutions capable of supporting ultra-high data rates and low latency. SerDes chips act as the key element of network infrastructure, facilitating rapid data exchange between routers, base stations, and processors. The global adoption of 5G, increasing bandwidth demands, and the proliferation of cloud computing and IoT devices have further increased the integration of SerDes devices in the sector. Further, government investments in broadband infrastructure, such as the EU’s Digital Compass and the US broadband expansion program, are accelerating the deployment of next-generation networks, further boosting the demand for advanced SerDes solutions.
Simultaneously, in the consumer electronics space, SerDes technology plays a key role in delivering high-definition audio and video, seamless connectivity, and improved device performance. From smartphones and tablets to smart TVs and gaming consoles, the need for faster data rates and lower power consumption is driving the adoption of SerDes in device design. With the increasing preferences of high-performance electronics among consumers, manufacturers have started integrating SerDes to enable high-speed data transfer and reduce latency, thereby enhancing user experience.
NXP and Aviva Links joined hands to advance in-Vehicle connectivity standards
In December 2024, NXP Semiconductors N.V., a global leader in automotive processing and networking, announced a definitive agreement to acquire Aviva Links, a company specializes in Automotive SerDes Alliance (ASA) compliant in-vehicle connectivity solutions. The acquisition supports the growing demand for advanced driver-assistance systems and in-vehicle infotainment, particularly in software-defined vehicles. These systems rely on highly asymmetric cameras and display networks with significant downstream and minimal upstream bandwidth. These days, current proprietary, single-sourced links restrict automakers to non-standardized architectures. Through this acquisition, NXP aims to overcome this challenge by enabling more open, scalable connectivity standards.
Final words
SerDes technology has emerged as a next-generation innovation, meeting the growing demand for high-speed, low-latency data transmission across leading industries. Moreover, with rapid technological advancements, upcoming SerDes solutions are expected to play a significant role in shaping the future of connectivity, performance, and efficiency across a wide range of digital applications.
