  • Why have gyms started to roll out different membership plans?
  • Monthly membership plan
  • Annual membership plan
  • Premium membership plan

Gyms have, over the years, become the ideal place for fitness freaks to exercise and workout. Since developing muscles and building a body is a fairly long process, individuals need to regularly visit the gym for these exercises. Also, the exercises and workout routines differ from person to person. These factors make it necessary for gyms to have several gym membership plans for customers to choose from.

What are the main types of gym membership plans?

Customers generally are expected to enroll in those gyms which have flexible membership plans. Probably the most common gym membership plan is a monthly plan. As the name suggests, this plan allows the user to visit the gym daily for one month. This plan is generally opted by those who are new to workouts and are visiting a gym for the first time. Also, people who work out regularly but are changing their gyms to try out new ones opt for these plans. Generally, monthly membership plans are expensive in nature as compared to annual membership.

Annual memberships are those which allow the customer to visit the gym daily for the whole year i.e., 12 months. Annual membership plans are usually used by those who have been working out in the gym for a long time now and are the gym’s loyal customers. Another added advantage of annual plans is that they help the customer save considerable amount of money. For instance, if the monthly fee of a gym in New York City is say, $100, then the annual fee for the same gym would be around $10,000, thus helping the customer save $2000. To provide more flexibility, many gyms, apart from monthly and annual plans, also offer quarterly and six-monthly plans. Quarterly plans, i.e., plans that allow customers to visit the gym for 3 months, are cheaper compared to monthly plans but expensive compared to six-monthly and annual plans.

While the aforementioned gym membership plans are based on duration, many gyms have plans based on the services they provide. For instance, one popular type of gym membership plan is that of premium membership. Premium membership allows the customer to gain access to all the machinery and services that the gym offers including cardio, weight training, pilates, yoga, acrobatics, meditation, etc. Also, many gyms have branches all over the city or state. Premium membership allows the customer to visit any branch, at any time of the day without any restriction. This is a very important facility for customers who travel regularly for work. Due to these benefits offered by premium plans, the premium membership segment is expected to gather an absolute revenue of $3,954 million by 2032.

To summarize, the rising popularity of gyms, health centers, and fitness clubs have mandated the businesses in this industry to launch several membership plans to cater to the various demands of the customers. With the rise in digitization and video conferencing, many gyms also offer online gym membership plans, wherein the trainer guides a customer over a video session and the customer exercises in his/her home. The gym membership industry has, thus, witnessed a massive boom in the past few years owing to the rising awareness regarding the importance of having a healthy lifestyle.
