  • Role of nanotechnology in improving the quality of automobile lubricants
  • The growth of the industry in the Asia-Pacific region

Automobile lubricants are fluids and specialized materials used in automobiles to reduce friction between their different components. Apart from this primary function, lubricants also reduce the rate of corrosion of automobile components and help maintain the running temperature, thereby bringing down the wear and tear of these components. Over the years, various types of lubricants have been developed including engine oils, greases, penetration lubricants, gear oils, dry lubricants, etc., which serve different functions.

For instance, engine oils are primarily used for maintaining viscosity even at high temperatures, while dry lubricants are mainly used for small components like hinges and threaded rods. Automotive lubricants, by reducing the friction between components, indirectly conserve the energy required for overcoming this friction and increase the energy efficiency of the vehicle.

Harnessing the power of nanotechnology: Advancements in automotive lubricants

Nanotechnology is a branch of engineering that involves designing and manufacturing different materials by manipulating their molecular structure at a nanoscale. Nanotechnology is an umbrella science that covers semiconductor physics, molecular engineering, surface science, microfabrication, energy storage, tribology, etc. The automotive lubricants industry has undergone substantial transformation due to the introduction of nanotechnology and nanoparticles.

Many research institutes have commissioned numerous studies in tribology, i.e., the study of friction, wear, and lubrication. These tribological studies have highlighted the positive impact of using metals such as nickel, silver, or copper in automotive lubricants. Furthermore, as per these studies, compounds like silicon oxide, titanium oxide, or zinc oxide, when added to lubricants, improve their quality and efficiency.

Titanium oxide, for example, has gained huge popularity as a stable additive in automotive lubricants. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles of size 18-20 nm have proven to be extremely effective in providing a thin protective layer to the engine, thus protecting it from premature wear and tear. This thin layer also reduces the friction coefficient in the contact region which brings down the temperature and pressure that is incident on engine joints. Also, tribology studies have confirmed that titanium dioxide betters lubricant quality by increasing the value of its flash temperature parameter. The flash temperature parameter (FTP) denotes the temperature above which the film thickness of the lubricant breaks down; thus, by enhancing the value of FTP, the longevity of automotive lubricants increases.

Nanoparticles, apart from these advantages, also enhance the bearing capacity of the lubricant and reduce the mean surface roughness of the automotive components. Owing to this utility, automotive lubricants with nanoparticles are now being increasingly used for gears, brakes, and bearings to increase the automobile’s energy efficiency.

The rise of the automotive lubricants industry in the Asia-Pacific region

The automotive lubricants industry has witnessed huge growth in the past few years across the globe, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. The industry in this region accounted for around 40% of the total revenue share and is expected to grow at a stunning CAGR of 4.4% in the forecast period. One main reason behind this growth is the huge rise in the demand for automobiles in various countries of this region. Secondly, the rapid pace of industrialization in this part of the world is predicted to provide a major boost to this industry in the coming period. The rise in population in this region has also increased the overall electricity consumption which is estimated to open new opportunities for growth in this domain.

Along with this, many leading companies are launching new products which are expanding the scope of the industry. For instance, Castrol India, a major oil company, announced the launch of a new range of automotive lubricants including Castrol Chain Cleaner, Castrol Anti-Rust Lubricant Spray, and Castrol 3-in-1 Shiner. These products are expected to address consumer demands holistically in the years to come.

To conclude, the introduction of nanotechnology in different types of automobile lubricants like engine oil, dry lubricants, and gear oil is predicted to take the industry to new heights. Furthermore, the rising expanse of the sector in the Asia-Pacific region and product launches by major companies are anticipated to augment the growth rate of this domain.
